This post is the same as what I just posted in my car build section, but I want to keep all the engine swap/subframe info here in one place for those who are just interested in the swap process.

Well I did finish the header last week and I cut out the front tube of the subframe and made a new removable one so I will be able to take the header and the clutch slave cylinder off the car without pulling the engine. My design has the front horizontal tube behind the front bumper, there is room behind there for a tube, that is how I picked the height. There are two short tubes positioned longitudinally that I used for anchors at the front for the other tubes. Once I removed the front tube I welded some metric nuts to the back of some circular caps which I then welded into the short anchor tubes. This allowed me to construct a new horizontal transversally mounted tube for the subframe that I could remove. I will be pulling the engine soon to finish up the welding on the subframe and give it a coat of paint. I will be painting up some of the bare metal to seal it off pretty soon because I am going to have to move the Travelle"R" from my friends garage soon as he needs it for a few weeks to do some work of his own. So it will be back at home in my portable garage, so I don't want it to rust up, especially as it is turning to fall here and there will be a lot more moisture in the air. The good news is that it will be more convenient for me to pop outside and do some work whenever I have a little time.
Here are some pics.

Caps with captive nuts TIG welded on.

New removable tube bolted on.

Couple more shots to show the little clearance there is between the front tube and the header and clutch slave.

Crikey! Beefy and elegant! I like the removable brace across the front; lovely work as usual.

incredible, it looks soooo good I love the way people over seas (from Australia) build their frames with tube steel only 8) they look so neat and strong :) .

Simon - How's your build going? Did I beat you to more of your great ideas?

I'm making some reinforcing plates and doing things I couldn't get to with the engine in. So far I'm mostly tack welding the new parts in because I'm nearly out of Argon in the TIG and it's a long weekend so I'm trying to make it stretch and try and finish up the subframe fabrication. I can finish the welding some evening this week.

Question: Do you plan to reinforce the caster arm mounts at the front of the subframe?

Image

All the braking and acceleration loads are transferred to the chassis through these mounts, it appears in your photo's that they're not going to be strong enough.. ?

sigh, nowhere lately Nigel... I haven't touched the traveller this year, let alone do anything with the conversion :(

you know you're well past any ideas I've had, or am yet to have... I'm thoroughly into the 'right-click, save as' territory now

You didn't really think I was going to leave those that way did you? I'm just in the middle bracing up the subframe and welding it up. I'll have some more pics soon.

Given the quality of the rest of the build... no, but.. I had to check

Maybe I have missed it, but what sort of alternator are you planning on running? Will it fit between the block, headers, subframe without fouling when the engine rocks?

sgc - Thanks for checking. I know I'm not perfect (but I'm so d@mn close it's quite scary) so it is good to have many people looking at it and helping me find problems as I go. So keep your eyes open in case I do make a mistake or miss something. Or if you have a brilliant idea that I haven't though of yet (or stolen from you Simon) suggest it to me, I always like good ideas.

pigsfly - I am going to use the stock Honda radiator flipped backwards on a mount up near the top motor mount. I am also going to use the stock Honda tensioner pulley on a custom mount so the belt can run around where the motor mount bolts to the block.

edit: I should have written alternator, not radiator. I do know the difference, but I got side tracked at work when I was typing this post originally.

Noooo, don't do that.. it'll heat the engine instead of cooling it :!:

i (believe it or not) don`t actually mind the way this subframe is progressing

I normally would bag the crap out of (most) of the jap conversion subframes that i`ve seen so far, & yes i have some concerns with a few fiddly things/designs on this one too,,, but i`ll reserve my judgment till we see the finished/braced article

lookin good so far , keep up the good work i say :-)
