I am in the process of messing around with my mini(aren't we all) and decided to get the annoying bonnet prop out the way and fit gas struts but just wondering if anyone knows the pressure needed!?

Also is it possible to do a solo strut rather than one either side!? Or does the required pressure just kill the hinge!?

I've got one strut only on the passenger side. Its a Monroe Lift-O-Matic 5897MK 0130N. I'd say that it is 130N force from the part number.

It is the perfect force for how I have mine mounted, I think. It holds the bonnet up well at full open, but it will also hold the bonnet at different angles partially open.

Do you have a photo handy?
Tried a bonnet strut on my roundy and it nearly ended in tears!

not the best pics but it gives you a bit of an idea. I've mounted it through the hinge and into to the catch for the old bonnet stay. easy.

It will depend on the leverage it can apply. The closer to the pivot the more force is needed because there is a larger closing moment being applied. If the strut acts up near the opening of the bonnet (at the front) there is less closing moment & thus the amount of force in the strut can be less.

It would be best to post some pictures of your set up.

was looking at mounting on the hinge area, so near the valcrum!

So will need some good push!

Think thats how the minisport/minispares systems work, but they are dual, wanted to do a single strut, but wanted to know what pressure the dual setups run?

"NG" recently purchased one of the UK dual sided ones so it could be good for you to PM him.

I put a dual one in mine. Bent the bonnet. Not happy.
Looking for another solution at the moment. Thinking of welding a stiffener brace into the bonnet to carry the weight.

No, my bonnet bent under its own weight! My struts were perfect for the job, trust me.

This is where i have put them on both of my clubbies. Never done a roundie.

The struts i've used have been weak 2nd hand ones from cars that have come through work.

I've only fitted them by the radiator and on one bonnet it broke the spot welds where the hinge bracket fixes to the rear edge of the bonnet.

On this example the strut is upside down. It's best to keep the fat end at the top when in the closed position, this lubricates the seal (one of mine got sticky from being the wrong way). Also, they work like a screen door strut, when fitted correctly (with the fat end at the top) it will slow down just before it reaches full extention, so it doesn't fly open and hurt the bonnet/hinges

I bought a set off the guy on here in QLD who was selling them. They worked really well on my clubbie and were small and out of the way and sound like just what you want. I seem to recall they were around $90 for the pair plus postage.

I've sold the car now so I don't think I have a photo. I also can't recall the guy's name but it was something like vanman or minivanman or similar - do a search on here under for sales.

If I find a photo I'll post it.
