... an 88º thermostat, Oz-spec radiator, solid state 10V instrument regulator, with Mini K/Cooper S Smith's electric temperature gauge and sender?

If you've done this, what range on the temp gauge was normal for your engine? Since installing the regulator in my car, my fuel gauge is scarily accurate for the first time ever but my temperature gauge climbs to just over half on the freeway, and about 5mm shy of 'H' in slow Melbourne traffic.

Before installing the regulator, I'd be lucky to see 5mm over 'C' on a hot day in stop-start traffic, and half way was pull-the-fark-over-NOW time.

I'm not worried about it overheating, it's not behaving like it's too hot and the overflow tank is doing its job.. but I am trying to get a handle on what the gauge reports as "normal".

Anyone?

G'day Simon,
Is there any way of knowing what temp range the thermostat is ( ie; is it marked in any way ) as my MK 2 S which has all of the above, doesn't get over 1/4, even less on the temp gauge at any stage and my fuel gauge doesn't read correctly , when it's full it only reads 1/2 a tank. I've even had a piece of wire down through the neck of the tank and slowly lifted the sender unit up with no difference to to the gauge, just assumed the gauge wasn't right. Don't know if this of any help to you or not.

Thermostats are commonly marked with the temperature its designed at.

Our S replica `Barney' had an 82C thermostat and one of Wombat's 10V regulators.
It used to get up near H in summer traffic, so I tested the top tank of the rad temp with a digital temp multimeter.
It was only about 75C I think. :lol:
These gauges are not the most accurate, are they. :lol:

Ah, that's what I wanted to hear 8)

This regulator is of my own manufacture, but to Herr Wombat's schematic and outputs 10V on the button. As mentioned, my fuel gauge is now absolutely spot-on (I let it get as close to 'E' as I dared without a jerry can, and then put 23L in it) so I'm pretty confident the 88º thermo is just causing the temp gauge to read hot.

Other than it pinging its nut off, I'm not sure I'd notice it overheating now anyway, with the expansion tank fitted it behaves itself nicely instead of spitting green snot all over the driveway :)

I believe that was my multi meter and we tested it in the neck and on the outside. I also have a Wombat 10V regulator installed which I need to purchase another 2 (1 for a spare and one for the Van)
Sorry I'm not checking the thermostat at this time of night as my little man and wife are asleep but if the Smiths Gauge, Rad and the galleries are spot on you will have not troubles with the 10V

AS you mentioned you had joy with the information you were getting from your temp gauge was this this the same from your fuel gauge also

Just to be sure, I'd check with a decent known capillary gauge. Then swap back to your electric gauge.

You'll have a reference and it will remove any doubt over the electric gauge.

I'd trust a glass thermometer more, go borrow yer mum's and hold in top of tank while it warms up. :wink:
