Stop driving the car. If you need to take it to a mechanic get it towed or on a trailer. It is not safe.
Now the warning is over.

Try the pinch bolt that attaches the steering column to the rack. Is it loose? If not remove the steering column on check the splines on the rack and the column. These are most likely the problems, so should be where you look first.

And dont dry steer, turn the wheel while not moving, it kills the splines on the racks quickly.

something has broken big time and do not drive it. If you wish, jack it up and put on axle stand and see if you can see anything that should be connected. Id have a guess its the tierods to the rack or top or bottom joints. I'f you haven't had much experience get it to one of the Mini experts to fix it and have a good look around while your at it

This happened to me years ago in my panel van in Brisbane. I was pulling out of a drive way in bowen hills, after picking up some demo tapes i had duplicated, for the trip home to Ipswich and she let go. I still thank God it happened then and not on the motor way. Would have been major carnage. Glad to hear your situation is all sorted kemal and that there was no carnage. :)
