Hello all i put this up last week only got 1 response, i am struggling for help we dont want to get too far ahead of ourselves in our resto and then have to dismantle etc..there are some holes in back seat and parcel shelf areas, is it just a case of welding in some large washers and some captive nuts?

Howdy Coaster,

Not just a case of welding in the nuts. Correct ADR compliance requires a plate (approx 75mm x 25mm) to be behind the sheet metal. Most seat belt places sell these that are designed to suit and have the right size nut welded on the back.

I fitted rear seat belts to my 63 mini. One of the big things I noticed is with the Clubman models that came from the factory with 3 point seat belts is they have a lot of extra strengthening in the parcel shelf. Their is an extra flap of steel from the boot lid opening to the rear of the shelf, Their are two angled box section's running at 45* angles where the bolt mounts and of course the strengthening plate and captive nut. Seeing as my 63 model only has the single thickness steel as the parcel shelf I decided that using the parcel shelf would not be strong enough so I simply went with lap sash belts instead of the 3 point belts you have in the front (mounted through the base of the rear seat).
Talk to an engineer first as they might agree their is not enough strength in the parcel shelf of an early mini. Remember the mounts have to hold something like 4 times the weight of an average human .
I'll try and get some photos in the coming week for comparison.

Isn't that tyre a bit bald? Far be it from me to assume it's in use as is, of course but since we're talking safety... But interested as to how this is done. I'm planning on removing the rear seats on my Mk II as the only people who will travel in the back will be dogs, and it will need engineering approval anyway for the Metro motor so may as well get it signed off as a two seater.

Here are two pics to compare the strength in the parcel shelf.
This one is a Mini Deluxe, same as 850 and mini K (I think) basically all round noses;

And this one is from a 1976 Leyland mini;

Like I said eiler their is an extra plate from the boot opening, angled box section reinforcements, and plates with captive nuts welded on all standard from the factory.
What isn't shown is the lower mounts. Their are ones into the wheel arches and they are simply a small plate with a captive nut welded on, easily viewable through the wheel arch from outside the car. Then their is the lower center mounts which is a larger plate around 200mm wide and 70mm high with both captive nuts welded to it, this is easily visible through the boot.
