OK.....today I had a spare hour to strip this new 998 I got for nix. This is what I found after I removed the head...

1. The 12G202 head has double valve springs in it :D

2. The bores are clean as a whistle! No scoring at all! Must have been machined recently. One had very slight surface rust in one bore....moisture must have got in there...nothing major though. Wiped it off with my finger. There is NO movement of the pistons in the bore at all.

3. The pistons are clean as a whistle....almost new looking! . They are dished, with the following on them.... 1D6 W39 at 12 o'clock and .508 -> at 6 o'clock. What does that mean>?

4. Stroke is 3 5/16 inch. That's an 1100 crank yea? JAM's 998 was about 3 inch stroke.

If you bore a motor, do you need larger pistons, or is it oversize rings only?

I think I will use the guts and head from this new motor in my original 998 block from JAM.

Look out Josh and others...there will be a new 'hot small block' (non turbo) in town..... :D

Yeah if you bore it you need O/S pistons. They come with O/S rings.
Buy the pistons BEFORE you bore it..
Yep, 3-5/16" (3.296" actually) is the good ol' 1098 stroke.

so....if I take these pistones out of the 'new' 998 I can measure them and have my original block machined to suit? Is that reasonable or stoopid?

Remember...I have NO MONEY right now....and 'might' have some later....so small budget.

Shame to not use this 'new' 998 block...it looks like it's in really good nick!!!!

If they are oversize and still GOOD, yes. Mini-Ha-Ha was running S/H +.040" race pistons from my old S motor, it flew for another 45,000 miles until I cracked one.
But a set of rings is not a real lot cheaper than with pistons too.

I'd take the 1098 Crank and put that into your 998
Pistoin wise I'll let Dr speak about it
Cam I would go RE13 but other wise I have a 731/631 sitting around
I would go the 202 head but possibly get a 940 and do the required

`Whatever' brand, sound stock bore to me. If O/S they would be marked 020, 040 or 060...
Do it properly. Spring for some new O/S ones and bore it!
I might be able to get some NOS (new old stock.. 1969 vintage) ones.. but I need to know what bore it is now. Stick a vernier in there..

coolies 8)

You have to run JAM at wakefield with us

I rang up the insurers the other day...good news is that going to a 1275 will only mean 20%ish increase in premium..any mention of supercharger or turbo basically means we will have to think about whether we are going to insure you or not...not to mention my hybrid ideas

Looks like i will be going 1275 when this one goes....

I'm very happy with the everyday performance of mine 8)

JAM's original 998 = virgin bore
998 #2 = 1098 crank, .020 oversize pistions, 12G202 head

Me thinks the right thing to do is bore out the original 998 and transplant 998 #2's internals and head

Then chuck on the twin 1 1/4 SU's I got as well.

Tempted to just bung in the '1975' 998 (1098) and do a dodgy blue slip.....but I am too honest...damn it!

Now I have to split both from their boxes and sus all that out.... :?
