Hi Guys, over at the ADO16 forums there is a few nice car coming together. This one is getting a US 7 port head, which given the way the dollar is going might be of interest to some? Not too much details on the head but I'm sure it couldn't be too hard to track the manufacturer down.

Looks ace this car.

Right then, more than one way to skin a cat, and nothing is sacred once it's on the internet.

From ADO16forums-
"...Yeah Paul, it is the aluminum head...not sure of availability in Europe, but I got mine from Pierce Manifold in CA...they seem to be the ones responsible for production and distribution to the retailers. They do not list it on thier site, but I was given the clue to call directly...cost about $400 less from them direct! Here are some more pics....."

there was an American firm that made 5-port aluminum A-series heads. I have personally seen at least two of those heads which had a serious thread-pulling problem. One head pulled the rocker shaft stud threads. Owners of that head got some serious practice installing Helicoils. Another head pulled the water temp sender threads right out of the head. I saw one head that became so banana-shaped that it would not hold a head gasket and had to be discarded. A Mini racer who happened to have a lot of experience with metallurgy and machining/engineering examined one of these heads when they first came out and stated that they were cast from an aluminum which was too soft for a cylinder head.

Heads that behave in this manner are not a bargain at any price. Make sure you know what you are buying.

Hey Doc are the westlakes the only cross flow to have the inlets coming in from the top.

I was out at Warrick Augustins the other day and he showed me a cross flow head, looked just like that, must have been skimmed to billio as it had nearly no combustion chamber. It is the original one from the BMC works car, i was amazed by it.

was cast though

I so want one of those alloy ones

The original Weslake cast iron 8 porter (used by the works teams) looks much the same as the alloy one, however it had a reputation for cracking.
Here's what one of those old timers looks like-

AFAIK the iron Weslake 8 port and the alloy copy are the only production heads that have the ports in from the top.
There is also the SOHC Howley head, (a pic in Vizard's book) but it never saw production. Yet....

we built up a 1415cc stroker engine with a cast iron weslake head for a young fella up here in Brisbane (quite a few years ago now tho) i`m not sure where it ended up but i do remember it (the whole power unit) being offered for sale in the mini owners club magazine & i`m sure it was sold, but to who i don`t know

Those inlet ports on that 7 port head look mighty big to me, perhaps too big?

Yeah that is part of the problem with the Minisport 7 port one. The other part being the differing port shapes due to the Weber bore spacing.

There were indeed a (very) few Arden semi downdraft heads... Picture from the Mk1-forum (I think):

But my favourite is the Bimmer Twinky. Got mine for $88, including postage. Now that's cheap? :) Guess that compensates for the bigger hassle of fiting it.

Why do people keep bringing up new heads and modifications. Makes it so hard to decide what to do.
