GR, are you referring to the thick vs thin flange blocks here?

Have you got the book the Original Mini Cooper by John Parnel

in it has a reference to engines in Sep 65 9f-sa-y38365 they made some changes
"filter mounting face on cylinder block now machined instead of dieast"

Its the only ref I could find

Yeah thats a good point, I bought a gt off Paul Gulson some 20 odd years ago and it had a thin flange block in it? and I have a Thick flange MK1 block too.... Is it possible they made them side by side? Its a bit strange that they would,, but this is BMC/Leyland  as far as engine numbers go,,, as far as I know the MK1 prefixes were all 9FSAY and the MK2's are 9FXEY.. Could be wrong

I doubt that they were made side by side and I have seen some of Pauls previous work so I guess I know what I want to say but I can't really say what I think.

I think they changed the casting patterns in 1969 but I can't get any closer than that.

Clubman GT?? Did the block have side plates? or an earlier one with the Cooper S Block?

Yeah, what you say about MKI and MKII Thick and Thin Flange, I've seen the same.

There was a running change early on in the Mk1s to strengthen the centre main area, as it used to break out in competition. I don't think this was at the start of the thick flange, that was later.
Sorry I'm going on memory here, no numbers...

Morris 1100,

You don't need to say a word   I know what you are talking about. The idea that it might not be the original engine did cross my mind but it wasn't one of his record holding race cars, it was a daily drive so I think it might have been the original,, there were no mods done to it (although knowing you know who he probably took any go fast parts off and sold me his sh!t) I can't remember but I think it was that car that I drove for a week and I broke the crank!!!

I thought you'd take an interest in this thread,, I'm sure you have a stash of paper work from BMC head office down there! :D

HI GTMOWOG
NO i'm not talking obout the flange i'm talking obout the strength of the centre main the later MK1 had no webbing around the centre main it was solid because the had a problem pulling the centre main out at revs obove 7400 rpm

Now I read somewhere that you are friends with the previous owner Matt... Maybe you can ask that bastard what he did with the engine number!!!
