Hi everyone i recently purchased a set of 1 1/4 SU's from a member and i just cant seem to get the dam things tuned.after itting the carbs i tried to tune them using a colour tune but can not for the life of me get them to go blue .it is showing me tha it is running rich.i have good compression and equl in all cylinders ,there seems to be no air leaks and the throttle shafts have no play ,Im lead to believe that the carby has beenn looked at by a few mini experts and where finally going right .after a few test i can bring the needle on the carby on the right all the way to the lock nut and there is very little change and the engine will idle on one carby but still rich.if i try the reverse it willl not run at all.The carbys are currently running a set of M needles but i have bought a set of GY's not fitted yet.after closer inspection the piston springs seem to be thesame tension ,but what i did notice is that the damper shaft is longer o the carby on the righ which therefore makes the piston housing longer where it narrows .could this be my problem. If you have any suggestions please help its driving me mad.
thanx eddie

you may have the wrong jets in there,,, quite commonly people buy .100 thou jets when they should be .90 thou

so the lenght of the piston damper shaft where you put the the oil should not matter if they are different?

No, but... the number on the plastic top should be the same. There were a few different dampers fitted to SUs on different cars. You may have 2 different damping ones.

yeah but,,, if the jet is wound right to the top & it`s still way rich, then the dampeners (at this stage anyways) mean didly squat

obviously you`d want "everything" right & correct so i`m not diss-ing any dampener problems, just at this stage getting it to at least idle correctly with the correct range of mixture adjustment is priority,,, sort the other crap out later i reckon

might have to check the diam of the jets first & an easy way is to just drop a 100thou needle into the jet to see if it fits or binds/jams before it bottoms correctly,,, that is "If" you had (or could borrow) a 100 thou needle of some sort (who carses what sort as long as it`s 100 thou)

it is an easy check & is very common problem as the old jets used to be black for 90thou & red for 100 tho,,, but these days they make them all black so it`s a bit more difficult if you don`t know this stuff... know what i mean???

no no,,, the 100thou "":"Needle""" is what we want to drop into the """JET""" to test the size of the jet

I just look at em to be honest cause i`m used to seeing the hole sizes & can pretty much tell what jet is in there,,, but the average Joe/Jane who doesn`t paly with them every day may not have the "Eye" for such a slight difference in size

know what i mean?

sorry, i`m blabbering again/still

:-)
