The speedo on my Mini stopped working last week. I'm about to start the dismantling task. If the problem is a broken cable, what's the easiest way to replace it? Where in the back of the motor/gear box is it connected? Is it easy to access once i get the Carby's off?

You can leave the carb's on. Jack up the car, put it on suitable wheel stands and then take off the front passenger wheel. You should be able to see where the speedo cable goes into the back of the gearbox. It is a bit tight to get into, Use a big screwdriver or similar to see if you can push the screw around and loosen it, you should then be able to take the rest off with your fingers.

If you do a search there's probably a pic on here somewhere.

First easy check is to unscrew the cable from the back of the speedo, push the car slightly whilst in gear and see if the inner cable turns. If so, the problem is in the speedo, if not it's the cable or gearbox drive.

Thanks Winabbey. I did that and it is the Speedo assembly! Does anyone know of a Mini spare parts dealer in Geelong with replacement Speedo's or do i need to make a drive to Melbourne?

Has the odometer been ticking over whilst the speedo was inoperative? If so it again proves the drive is getting to the speedo assembly but just not operating the speed (kmh) dial.

Here's a list of Mini parts places where you may be able to pick up a second hand one (and take 50,000 kmh off your car's life at the same time!!). You'll see there's one in Hoppers Crossing.

Also try Googling Automotive Instruments in your area as they may be able to repair yours for a modest sum. Rodger Howard from Howard Instruments in Heidleberg is a Vic Mini Club member and may help you decide on your best option over the phone.

i think there is a gauge place just near Rippleside park on melbourne road, on the same side of the road as the park.

and you should come to our monthly dinner! not sure where the next one is, but keep your eyes on the "planned events" section :D

just as a side note,,, the car doesn`t have to be in gear to check the speedo works,,, it works just rolling along in neutral because the speedo drive gear is attached to the diff-pinion gear
