This is my first mini I picked up 21 years ago when I was 15. (showing my age!) Did it up with 1310, 1 3/4 su etc etc. 2 weeks after I got my licence, this is what happened after a ball joint pin snapped, on a straight bit of road. You can see the polished part of the pin that had been cracked for a while. Guess i thought i would save money by just adjusting the old ones!! Unreal what makes sense to a 17 year old!
I owe my life to a rollcage made of steampipe that took the brunt of the redgum fencepost and a 4 point harness. Still remember the scabs from the harness burns. Oh, and the 13 stitches in the back of my head, good scar that one.
Yes that is a clubman GT in the background. Wish i still had that one!

It's incredible that you survived!

The balljoint question is an interesting thing, I'd have generally thought that factoty balljoints (depending on estimated age) would be of higher grade and better quality than the ones you buy later?

Thats a huge accident. Even moved the speakers to under the seats.

Did it rip the hubs off in the accident?

I've got to ask, why didn't you scavenge the parts and rebuild the GT :?:

It ripped everything off in the accident, you can see the pile of panels in the background! Had one rim, engine (transmission case was smashed)and a few bits and pieces left, thats it! Oh yes, because i was 18 and invincible I was doing 140kmh at the time.....Probably would not have been as bad if i was doing 100kmh.

The parts got transferred into another roundnose i had, a slap together job painted with a spraycan..real nice??!! Learnt a lot about engines with this mini though, how building an engine with 12.5:1 compression and trying to rev it to 7500rpm, especially on normal fuel doesn't always make life for pistons easy (Destroying them on two seperate occasions i might add), trying to do burnouts with the handbrake on not good for spider gears, etc etc... I did start doing up the GT, got it painted and to a rolling shell stage-then sold it and all my other mini stuff after I discovered japanese reliability with a Datsun 1600. Oh how wise i was back then, first year apprentice mechanic and I knew everything already.

Oh, by the way, my VAN HALEN tape was still ok, even though the stereo was not!!!

Which album? As long as it was one from before the 1984 album, Sammy Haggar is ok,,, but David had it going on 8) I love Van Halen, Eruption was one of those pieces that made me pick up a guitar.... well that and Chuck Berry, and Rory Gallagher.... Go figure

I gotta say, reading your thread makes me feel like putting up a disclaimer in my Back Yard S*** thread about how there are somethings that are OK to dogdy up and some stuff you should leave the hell alone,,, I'm glad you survived to warn us and so that we could learn from your mistake!!! .... (and that you Van Halen tape survived)

 its all good... I like some of the stuff from that album, the ballards they started writing were a nice change and a testiment to the fact that Eddie really is a top quality muso... Dreams is the only song I can really remember off that album though.... Was that the album with Love Walks In? Or was that later? I can't remember... I'm gana go rumaging thru my old albums tomorrow :) Good to see you had you priorities in order!!
