The Poastage cost by UPS was 150GBP ,which is not to bad for 35kg.

Hey im wondering how would this motor deal with a turboed/supercharged engine putting out about 150hp+ at the wheels, as well as a standard sccr gears??

Some one mentioned the jack knight 6 speed earlier... They were developed for the 1990's mini works team. They built the with nurburgring in mind. They were that crappy that alot of the drivers said they'd have done better times with well sorted 4 speed and the right diff. The 6 speeds were stripping 3 gear from memory.

Its a bummer about these guys runing into money troubles. There 5 speeds (at least in my humble opinion) were one of the better thought out ones.

The 3.2 diffs are pretty drivable in a road car and probably the next best thing to a 5th gear. I have one in one of my minis, its only putting out about 65-70hp and even with the taller gearing it will still spin the wheels into 2nd gear. 100km/h is a very comfortable 3500rpm in 4th. At Hay someone might have got it up to the imperial tonne, no worries, laughing, it didn't take long. Only might of though. :D Gotta say though, I recon 3.1 would be to tall with this motor at least.

Didn't know that JKD did 6 speed boxes, thought only Trans-X (sequential shift) did them and they only stripped when jumping and not lifting the foot on the pedal.

I recon a 5 speed in a Mini is just the ticket, but a 6 speeder???????

Hi Folks,

Just re-building my 5 speed Minispares box so thought I would add my thoughts... Mine is one of the first they made with Trans-X, I bought it in 1997 after researching the 3 5 speeders available at that time: Minispares, Minisport and Jackknight. Still have all the paperwork and letters etc, can scan and add to the forum if people are interested?

Chose the Minispares as it was the best value, available as a kit at the time and could be re-built at home. Made the right choice as it is the only one still in production though it has evolved a bit. Needless to say still going strong though the 5th gear teeth are beginning to show signs of wear, hope I can get replacements when I need them!

Only rebuild as my main bearing went and left swarf in the sump, only way to clean it all out was to strip the whole box out and clean.

Well worth the money IMO...

Glad to read of your experince with this gearbox and that it has given you such good service. 'In Service' Info on any of these 5 speeders is a bit hard to come by.

Since you've found some worn parts, why not get new ones now in case they dry up in the future? besides, the exchange rate is awsome at the moment.

Why am I not replacing worn parts, Answer is in 2 parts:
Firstly There is a lot of life left in the gears and I don't have any fear of getting replacement parts, Minispares have been making this box for over 15 years, there must be many out there so even when they stop making them (which I do not see happening in the near future) they should carry spares for a reasonable time...
Secondly, money is tight at the moment. Originally I wanted to build up a K1100 engine... Now my plan is to rebuild what I have and run it or the next few years and when I have the cash build something special. At that time I will need to go straight cut on my box so will do a complete re-build then...

Sorry, I didn't mean to replace them now, but you can by now see what is wearing and what is not. Stock up on those that are. If they are worn but still have pleanty of service life, then no don't replace them. But at the end of the day if $$ are tight, then that would have to be an over-rider.
:D

Well - the minispares 5 speed gearbox has had no problems at all ,fifth gear makes a bit more noise ( gear whine) than fourth gear.
Very happy with it and glad I got it when I did.

Hi Minibug,
Interested to see you got a 5 speed. Did you get direct from Minispares?
Had a look at the pics - is it a custom casting or a modified standard box?

I managed to get my hands on a NOS Jack Knight helical 5-speed from the mid 1990s. It's a custom casting and very nicely made. Very glad I got it even though it cost me AU$1100 to get it shipped from USA....Don't ask! It's done a coupla thousand klicks now and no probs, so fingers crossed.

Cheers.

Didn't KG Engineering do a 6 speed at one time? Was it all their own work or did they just put a kit into a casing? Seem to recall they had one in their roadgoing Clubman GT with an Arden 8 port and twin webers.(featured in one of the Mini Magic publications). Wonder where that car is nowadays?

we used one of the KG`s 6-speed Dog boxes when i was racing Lakeside/QR/Morgan Pk etc back in the 90s,,, great box, but also "GREAT BIG" gears-shafts etc,,, very heavy, LOTS of rotating mass,,, heaps more "Oil-Pumps" (so to speak) & a difficult first-to2nd gear change as it was "hook-first" (so called cause first gear is beside reverse & then pull forward into neutral, then left & then forward again to get 2nd which is in the spot that first usually is)... once you`re in 2nd then you`re away & shift as per normal "double-H" pattern (because there`s another 4 gears to go :-)

quick changes tho (apart from first to 2nd) & very strong,,, just WAY TOO MUCH inside the thing & a right pain in the butt to repair (which we have had to do on a number of occasions on both boxes,,, but once those dramas were sorted they`re very strong.

However---> i`d much rather a smaller gear kit & a sequential shifter,,,, oh that`s right , i already have that in my buggy now :-) (i know it`s cheating using a motorbike g-box) :-)

Daryl (from KG) was a pretty smart cookie tho & made some pretty good things, the brown cross-flow mini went to one of my friends (Ken) who then later sold it on,,, Tony-> "Convertable mini" will know some more of where KG`s other bits went as he bough a pile of stuff from Ken

We have another one of KG`s 6-speed dog boxes here in Stewys Sports sedan mini (also bought from Ken)

& another friend of mine Bob kennedy from Murwillumbah also bought a 6-speed i believe

I believe that another fella by the name of "Attard" also bought a 6-speed dog box from KG way way back (1980s-ish) & fitted it to his sports sedan mini

so,,, there`s a few around

I also believe they (KG eng) made 5-speed helical boxes as well, altho i personally hadn`t seen one ,,, i think John from mini King was selling them,,, but all this was a long long time ago
