But i've seen a person i know who is on ausmini have one or two up on ebay before.

There is no law against buying and selling ID plates from old cars.
There are people who collect them. Just like stamp collecting.

It may be against the law to fit a different plate to a car to change its ID but it is not against the law to re-body a damaged car.

Actually there is a law against it. If the car is damaged beyond repair you can't put that plate on another car legally. It is the same thing. It may not be illeagal to collect Cpmliance plates, but we all know that people are buying them not to collect. I'm not saying what you can and can't do, just telling you whats legal. Do as you wish. I know alot of cars out there have had plates swapped over. But it's still not legal.

Yes you can..... To repair it! That is why manufacturers sell complete body-shells. That is how they repair some cars!

I am not saying that you can buy a tag on Ebay and stick it on a car.
What I am saying is that if you crash a brand new car the insurance company may use a new body-shell to repair your car.

The part number for a bare body-shell for a Morris 1100 was HYA7151.

I know of just such an example, car extensively damaged...usually would be considered a write off, wreck bought by owner with permission and with the intention of legal re-birthing.

Ha Ha Ha this thread is soooo funny. The House of MG in Brisbane sells these blanks. Through Unique Cars magazine I have a company in Woolongong that does reverse stamping like the original.
This is why in Aus we have more Cooper Ss than were made.
Is that a Cooper S you own or a Deluxe?????

I could be wrong but i really don't think that you can walk in and ask a car maker to sell you a complete body shell. Cars aren't reshelled after accidents it is cheaper for the insurance companies to write them off. The fact that you can't buy new shell's ( for a Mini ) in Australia means that you would have to use a used shell, and hence a pre exisiting complied vehicle, which is illegal.
Even if a car company sold shells without body numbers, i don't thin there would be anyway they would sell them direct to a non certified repairer for use in a back yard rebuild.
Of course I don't have the legal expertise to know for sure that it is illegal, and willbe happy if someone can prove me wrong. Then i will have learnt something and everyone here will know the truth of it.
The only person i know who is in a great place at the moment is Chris (Ausmini User) who has picked up a shell that never recieved a body number or compliance plate.
I wonder if that will mean when chris has his car registered it will be complied as a 2005 model?

EBay finished an auction early on a Cooper S plate 3 weeks ago.For many years I was told the sale of ID plates is illegal.Cooper plates on a Deluxe is fraud and criminal and so are the pieces of crap that sell them as genuine.

I work for Corrections.Thieves steal cars,strip them and leave the car body where it can be easily found.Insurance companies write off the cars and sell the remains at auction.The thief that stole them, purchases the body and replaces the parts with the ones he stripped.The original parts.By law that car is legally his and he sells the car in the paper or where ever.That's re birthing.Not removing a plate from a car body to put on another,that's FRAUD.

So what does he scratch out the body number stamped on his shell and whack on his plate?Tampering with a body number is illegal my friend,try your local police station if you wish.
