Matt, what do you think of the Rover Cooper's cooling circuit then? It's basicly the same(??) thing but goes in the bottom hose instead of the heater tank (which actually sounds 'cooler' ).

I recently put 1995 model Auto 1275 in my 89 Rover. I don`t have a by pass hose on the head, What I have done is I took the heater outlet (at the back of the head) and connected to the inlet manifold (alloy) driver side and other side of the manifold connected to the heater. Other side of the heater is connected to the bottom hose of the radiator. Thermostat housing has got sandwich plate with outlet buy I blanked it.
Is this wrong guys. if it is what would you suggest
I also changed the water pump pulley from 4,75 inch to small one, I used to have that small pulley on my 998 that should not be a problem wright?

Hey jan,,, yeah they`re better than the stock early system as the by-pass can actually acumulate any air in the header tank, & then it goes to the bottom hoes,,, they have that funny moulded bottom hose But it`s still not "optimum" in my books as there is still hot water """able""" to find it`s way back into the bottom hose , all-be-it -> not so easy as the std early system, so it`s at least a "Bit" better
I don`t think anyone will ever change my mind about the system we use tho

Minidna,,, welll,,, provided that you don`t shut off the heater tap (if you have one fitted) then all is "sort of" good-ish ,,, but you still have "fairly" un-cooled (except for the heater cooling it) water able to enter back into the engine,,, so it`s (again) at least better than straight out of the hot engine & back into the hot engine, so yes it`s "ok"-ish simply because it`s taken from the hot end of the engine & isn`t "too" disturbed flow.

I still prefer it to be cooled through the rad tho,,, it`s really not too hard to set up & is "Very" fool proof ... although i do know some dorks who havn`t got a clue even though i`ve spent hours with them talking & showing them about it

I took it under advise and I did changed the route.

Does anyone else think it's a weird design decision to put that short hose in there? Why didn't they just extend the deck out and have the water passage run through the head?

Actually, the whole thermostat housing seems like a bit of an afterthought... the way there is so little meat around the housing bolts/gasket and then they go and run an engine steady mount off it all.
