Hi all,

Just wanted to check if the rover A+ starter is different from the A series?
If so what is the difference, will my A series one work?

If not who has a spare?

It has a solenoid on the back which engages the starter. And the ring gear is different. Some will tell you you need to rewire it - you don't. There's a pretty simple trick geting it to work with a wing mounted / external solenoid.

Just fit the big cable to the starter as with the old one and put on a cable bridge to the bigest spade on the starter solenoid. Like this: http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4814/dsc00270wa5.jpg

Doing it this way you don't have to butcher any wiring, it's easy reversable and works great (runing it this way for over 3 years now).

no, you can't

starter and flywheel gear won't match due to the finer flywheel tooth pattern, 129 teeth of the Rover against the 107 of the older one

I also have a couple of A+ starters that you can have / borrow.
Back down that way in a couple of weeks.

Thers is more to the A+ starters being different than the A series Inertia Lucas M35 type. The pitch of teeth on starter drive, Cog Diameter is smaller and also the shaft is not dead in line with the mounting bolt holes like the lucas one. I have done all this studying when I was developing the Bosch Planetary geared starters for Minis. I have produced and built these Bosch starters to fit both A and A+ motors and they are 2 completely different starters. The advantage with My Bosch starters for mini is that they are very powerful and the can also be fitted without obstructing or sacrificing the space for the oil cooler as the solenoid is more or less underneath.

Which starter motor do the 1275 A+ automatics use?
The Rover style incorperating the solenoid, or the old style A series with the seperate solenoid?

It seems the later Rover and in particular the 1275, do not have the rounded teeth or the same number of teeth on the fly wheel, different pitch and soliniod action. While this works better, I don't have one...

Looks like I have found one in Victoria, but may check back with you.
