In Short, DONT BOTHER.

As many of you read, i cracked the manifold abover the joint where it meets the exhaust pipe. It cracked off just below where the three exhaust outlets meet.

Anyhow, took it to a welding place, and they put it on a metal plate, earthed it off, and hit it with the welder and it just melted.

Credit to the guy at the welders who took the next hour and half drip welding with an oxy to rebuild the entire bottom half of the manifold.

So im back on the road now, and it didnt cost a cent, but it was more trouble than it was worth, and next time ill just get a replacement. Just didnt want to wait for it being stuck literally in the middle of the country.

On a side note.

There are 7 mokes, and one cooper S in Alice Springs, all owned by the same bloke.

Most cast iron exhaust manifolds don't weld well when old, carbonised and cracked. Don't bother, just find another.
Years ago I had a cracked exhaust one on my 265 Hemi Chrysler, I was going to weld it. Until I undid it and it fell off in 4 pieces. Was bent from the heat too.

On the other hand, Gafmo broke a bottom flange off his Alfa twinspark's front header a year or more ago. So I MIG welded it back on with 316L S/S wire, and it's still attached... :P

For what it's worth I've had mixed sucess. The BMC / Leyland ones I've had some sucess with and some not. Pre-heating sometimes helps. The Jap ones I've had NO luck with at all.

But if there is another manifold at hand, yes, why bother???
