My question is to do with timing. I am trying to figure out the impacts of the cam and ignition timing if they are out as at the moment the engine is overheating and I believe that to be a timing issue and it was brought up in my other thread about the exhaust wrap. How can you tell from just a video of the engine idling that it is out of timing and needs a tune? So my untrained eyes and ears it all sounds normal.

So what are the sure signs of incorrect timing?
The car is sluggish off the line and backfires, also when at cruising speed I then put it into neutral to come to a stop it sometimes stalls.
I have changed the needle in the carby but is it still running too lean? Needle from the top of my head is BCF.

Help much appreciated. I think I bit more then I can chew with this one

i was taught to use a vacuum gauge to time engines which will tell you various conditions of an engine.if you have a high lift cam with large overlap your reading should be about 50 kpa at idle,whereas with a standard cam about 60 to 74 kpa at idle.ive used this method without any probs in the past .you need to get your vacuum source from underneath the butterfly ie manifold.dont know how much a vacuum gauge is but id say round $50 or so

thanks encho, will get myself a gauge as I have the SC12 on it, so was planning on getting a boost/vaccum gauge.

but still curious as to the specifics, all the dirty details of it all. if the people who don't want to explain and have some good links with reading material that would be good too

You need to get the fuel mixture set first an SC set up will generally required a custom needle. As you have said it is running lean, and backfiring on acceleration is a typical sign.
With the timing, set it with a timing light at about 8degrees btdc. If it has too much advance it will ping this is bad. Probably don't want any more than 25 degrees total advance with an SC.
