Certainly do speak to your engine builder. The cams, rockers, valves & springs must go together as a package. If you don't, well, here's what happens with more valve lift than the springs can handle:

1.5 roller rockers and a Kent MD296SC cam. Fortunately all fixed without any major damage.

If you run 1.5 rockers with any cam, fit valve springs that will allow enough lift without coil binding.
GR and I both like Minispares C-AEA526 springs, with 1 less coil than most, they are good for .495" valve lift and 8000 rpm. Plenty for a fast roady... :P

Available from Karcraft, Minisport SA, Minis Plus, etc etc. $90/set approx.

Ok, well basically the engine builder has my complete trust. I just set him a budget and he is running with it. He spoke to GR for a recommendation of cam etc so I guess the two of them would have sorted it out.....but i'll chat to him anyway just to be sure!

Bamnfi, here's why I will never use Minispares Uk rockers ever again

EDIT> Mini Sport not mini spares. The Mini Spares ones are good (so far)

Image

I had these suckers set at 0.018", and they wer cranked up thight. That little fella let go on the F3 at about 9:30 at night.... not happy...

On the bright side when I contacted them, they were all to happy to replace it, but I refuse to put them back in the car.

Geeeeesssss that is one impressive collection of shattered springs there awdmoke!!! :) That combined with my rocker gear would look impressive in the trophy cabnet! I did that once too. I didn't check for coil binding and yeah,, here's what I learnt out of it.......

The ideal minimum gap between coils is .050" with a total freakin minimum of 0.040". So I always check now, Sometimes it means getting the bottom of the valve spring seat cut to suit. But its cheaper and better than doing that to your motor.

Did that do another damage awdmoke?

Luckily, no other damage. None of the spring segments were small enough to slip down the pushrod holes. I did get the head pocketed to give the springs a bit more room.

Not pretty Phat Kat!
I figure I will get the full roller rockers and new springs as per the good Doc's advice.

I don't reckon you will break the Minispares roller tip ones on a road car, unless a valve jams or the springs get coil bound. Full rollers are overkill for a street motor and I doubt the Minispares version are stronger than their roller tip ones.
You can get seriously good strong roller rockers, but look at spending north of $700 a set.

I have the Minispares 1.5 forged rockers in my car and modified Toyota Corolla ones (1.46:1) in my 1412 stroker motor.
No, my (bronze) valve guides are not worn out yet, even with .493" valve lift.

PK,

Did you have the cam in first?

Just wondering what the difference is from running the cam AND then adding the lifters. My preference is to do both but I am just inquisitive

Are you sure they are MINI SPARES roller rockers as mini spares NEVER
made red roller rockers, they have always been purple except early in the eighties when they made blue 1.3 roller tip rockers.

Hey Bamnfi,

Sorry mate I did not. I have a motor with a 266 and high lift rockers, but it had the high lift rockers from the start. Can't help you there. Maybe some one else can provide you an answer.

Cheers
