Okay, I give up - im asking for help...

The ball joints on my disc hubs will not come undone, I have never had problems before with other minis, but these just will not come off.

Even with the balljoint in the vice, and a bar on the steering arm, the vice just sliped (small vice)

Im at the point where i dont care if i destroy them in the process - I will replace, if i can just get them off!

They seem to get tighter the long they sit - I did some up about 3 months back and they were too stiff when done and left it until yetserday to redo the shims - took a hell of a lot more than 70ft/lbs to get it undone :?

You need a bigger vice - mine is 4" and is barely adequate

Soak them in diesel for a week. Then, dry them off and try again.

If it doesn't work then apply heat to the arm so it can expand and release the thread.

Don't you mean heat the retaining nut? As you heat the nut it gets bigger the 'hole' gets bigger and loosens it. Heat the body and the thread expands and locks more into the nut

Sounds to me he has gotten the nut off, just can't get the taper to let go. My .02c in this case would be to get the ball joint splitter talked about on here not too long ago. I haven't had one yet that wouldn't seperate with this tool.

Hi Guys,

Just to clarify, The hub is off the car, cv's are out, arms are all off, Im trying to get the balljoint apart so I can adjust the shims, or replace the joint.

I think I shall try some heat.

I don't think holding the 'nut' in a vice would be the go, though I've never done it that way, it would tend to slip out as it is only being held on 2 sides and tightening the vice only tightens the thread...........

I'd suggest holding the hub in a vice (in a careful way) and using a deep dish socket (1 1/2" AF) to undo them. Yes you don't have one etc but I don't think you could do the job any other way. Try supercrap for the socket and wrench (they're usually 3/4"drive).

I removed the nut by bolting the hub to a spare wheel. I stood on the tyre and a bit of the backing plate so it wouldn't spin. too easy.

Yes you really do need a deep socket - I had a shallow one and a deep one was like $54 :shock: so I measured up and bought a 27mm socket for $5 from CrashConverters and welded it on top. 8) Last of the cheapskates :mrgreen:

Hey yeah wombat, not a bad idea. I have actually made complete 6 sided sockets from 1 x 5/16" flat bar steel - not for impact use!! I made them to fit the metro ball joints. Took a bit of time but hey, back then I didn't even bother pricing a socket as I just had no money.
