Hi,
Im just considering my options when building my new engine and was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on what cam i should use.

So far this are the specs im looking at:
1275 A+ (already have) (maybe bored out to 1380 if i have the $)
Ported head with 1.4" inlets and standard exhaust valves
MS big bore 1 3/4" alloy inlet manifold with ported HIF44/ K&N cone
wedged + balanced crank with centre main strap
lightened flywheel + bonded and rivetted clutch plate
LCB and single box exhaust
Pulsar dizzy
Corolla 1.5 ratio rockers

Now about the cam - what would produce more power, ultimately? Ive heard about this RE13, but being in NZ no one is using it and there isnt a lot of info around on it. The 286 sounds good, and as this will be my club car i will want it to be able to have some power up top (8k hopefully). Driveablity isnt too much of a problem and i quite like the sound of a 'lumpy' A series. So what cam do you think would be more suitable?

Thanks, Rob

Both are good, but I believe you will have more driveability, midrange and top end with the RE-13. The MD286 is a pretty old design.

We dynoed Ozmotorsport's (was Baracade's) 1380 @ Xmas `03 at Russell Eng, and got 110HP at crank (286 cam). I'm hoping for 120+ from my current 1360 engine build (RE-13 cam).

Both engines using 45mm carbs- Weber (his) & Dellorto (mine).

Thank Drmini,

Gafmo, we'll see. The thing is i have a nice slot drive A+ cam sitting here, and i dont really want to change oil pumps as this one is mint. I dont think it would be too expensive to air freight one over and back?

Shouldn't cost much to airmail it.
Not many slot drives here, as we never got Minis with A+ in 'em. But I do.. 8)

Drmini,

Just wondering what the specs of your 1360 will be? Just to give me an idea of the power i will be producing.

Also, have you modified the gearbox at all? I've heard standard mini boxes dont last too long with anything over 100hp going through them...

Cheers

PM sent.
Should have around 120 at the crank..
Mini boxes are good if rebuilt properly and not run into the ground.
Boostedmini is using a stock Mini-K box (ie all synchro remote) under his 1400? Metro turbo motor. Had it in for years, no probs yet. Only the clutch... but I think it's sorted now.

Dr is right if the box is built well and all the bits are replaced etc and it is driven with some consideration for it, it should last for a while, mine has been in now for five or so years and apart from a worn diff pin that is all.
just make sure its all new good quality stuff you put in ( i used all gen rover stuff)

I have just ordered a RE13 with the kind help / refferal from Dr Mini from Graeme Russell, postage was $30 ozzie peso's...

i am not that impressed with most of the UK cam grinds as Dr Mini noted old hat..

i lived in OZ a few years back and the car scene is high spec due to being isolated for many years and the OZ guys having to do just get on and do it..

and the atomsphere / air condtions are different down under and the Re13 cam has been designed for southern hem condtions

i am in Wellington and are building a 1360 mini should be up and running in about two months so we will see how it goes

cheers

Mine should be mobile again by Monday, I hope.. 8)
Short motor is all assembled now, just have to pull the old lump out, fit a 3.64 diff to the box and bung the 1360 on it.
Cam is the latest version of the RE-13, I'm running 1.5 rockers although GR says I'll lose `some' power below 6000.. :P
