Current plastic covered seal will grip fine, just clean the cover hole out with thinners and wipe dry.
Early seals were metal outer cased.
The worst covers for this problem though are chrome plated ones... :x

Ive seen a number of different profiles in this seal from 1 raised radial ring , 2 raised rings to a plain flat profile
Doc are any of these the plastic one you refer to? I thought they were all made out of something like silicon rubber
Is the plastic one some new (relative) invention that I missed. Were they ever fitted by the factory?

Sorry just reread your post and realised you were refering to the timing cover seal not the 1/2 moon seal
Question is which profile of 1/2 moon seal the best to use?

I've had no problems with the 2 raised ring half moon ones.
I put Loctite 515 on the bearing cap, fit the seal and smear a bit on the ribs.
Then I put the BOX on the MOTOR, upside down. Less chance of the seal moving.

Yep, those timing cover oil seals can be little buggers.
My method is to install the seal with a smear of Ultra blue into the cover, and letting it cure with a weight holding the seal in. Never had one move with this method.
