I liken these slots to those in a centrifugal pump impeller, where the inner part of the slot leads the outer.
This gives some airflow outwards, to cool the rotor and carry dust outwards.
If you look inside any ventilated rotor they are generally made like this.
Buy yeah I have seen slotted ones fitted wrong too. I guess if you buy a pair and know no better you only have a 50/50 chance of getting it right, hey.
