I posted this info in my Jills van thread also, but figured a thread just about the rear roof spoiler would be valuable to some.
I bought something for the Mini today Im really pleased about. I didn't "need" it, I didn't intend to do it "now" but what the hell I thought... do it Jill do it!

So, I went to the local wreckers and asked if they had any rear boot or roof spoilers for small cars in stock... um hello "just this red one off a 92 Lancer" :P
Sold

k, so I get it home, I know I can make this work, will be a heap of cutting, molding etc, but Ive done a cut down roof spoiler before so I know exactly how much work Im in for here.

Im planning on cutting it down, then removing two sections to shorten its width, so it will sit just perfectly on the back of the van roof.

Before I attack it.. this is what I have to play with - a 92 Lancer boot spoiler complete with brake light :)

Image

I'll be chopping it right down in height, but the curve of the existing spoiler matches the curve of the roofline beautifully

I'll have to cut it down in height, then remove a small section from both sides of the brake light, then rejoin and then mold into the roof.
I reckon give it an angle of around 3 degrees for perfect downforce, should just about do it :)

Image

Will post more pics after I attack it.

Im guessing the best way to rejoin will be to use fibreglass and resin, but has anyone had success with anything else? Like araldite?? Im pretty sure its plastic but will confirm that after I cut it up :P

Cool Jill, be interested to have a look when i grab those wheels.

On another note theirs a young girl in my area drives a yellow and black van with mini written down the side. A couple of years back when i first started getting an interest i tracked her down and asked about the spoiler on her roof. Apparently is a nissan silvia wing with the ends chopped of and two endplates made up looks great, Havent seen it for a while or i would post a pic. Looking forward to seeing how the lancer one goes.

Cheers
Mark

A friend of mine has actually made his own spoiler for the roof of his round nose van. He has also designed and made his own body kit for a clubman van. Obviously he doesn't want to sell them as it then wouldn't be one of a kind.

Pity but I guess you can understand where he's coming from.

Yours looks good Jill and can't wait to see more pics of the progress.

Jill your vans a clubby front innit
i reckon the spoiler would suit it
maybe not a roundie

the highness of the spoiler brings it a little closer to the ford escort van dontcha think

I got to it today with the hacksaw.. first cuts I took out about 70mm either side of the brake light, then another 20mm either side. Width is pretty good at this point, taped it up with gaffa tape so I could check its positioning etc and now I'll lower the ends so the centre (that Ive already chopped) comes down to meet the roof.

But so far, so good...

Side view (remember it will be coming down approx 30mm in height from where it sits in these pics)

Had to lighten this pic up so you could see anything, but note the centre mount thats already chopped. The ends will be shaved until the centre mount comes close to the roofline.

On a not so positive note though, I popped in to a panelbeater yesterday afternoon and asked about joining plastic spoilers. Its not as easy as working with fibreglass and special glues (2 part epoxy) are the way to go.. but I think Im going to use fibreglass anyway pffft what does he know :)

Anyone else had any experience with repairing plastic spoilers? I'll hit Bunnings and ask their friendly staff what's the best way to join plastic to plastic

gafmo - yes, Im leaving the water channel
68matic - yes its a clubby, and my wheels during painting, sanding, priming.. they are always covered. I have a set of jumpers with a cut down the back, they slide over the wheels perfectly :)
iwannamini - make ya own! ;) sheesh, this is how ya do it :)
minimark - I originally thought of getting another 200sx spoiler (Silvia) so it matched the other car even better, but this is what the wrecker had at the time, and this shape worked better with the flatter backline/profile.. It'll do ;)
