I am thinking about starting a build project thread and need some feedback on etiquette in regards to posting images. Is it generally accepted that linked image posted should be 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768? Larger images such as 1024w seem to take over a lot of the screen real estate when browsing.

What would be great is there was option when posting for thumbnailing the larger images - so the thumbnail (eg 200 x 150) is clicked on to link to the larger 1024x768 image? How is a thumbnail coded in a post (is it possible)? Do I use the width & height setting (eg "width: 150px; height: 200px;") as per html code - but the IMG tags in when posting don't seem to be structured the same way as HTML.

Depending on where you upload photo's to this is really simple, Photobucket for eg, select all the photo's you want in your post and then pick generate forum code, and pick the correct one (the one with IMG tags), it will thumnail automatically for you.

The etiquette in similar PhP forums is to use 640 x 480 sizes as it fits on most screens quite nicely without distoring text or frame width. Creating thumbnails is not liked as it creates another download or another window to open to view it.

Many other forums have also adopted a jpg only format and reject images of greater than 200 kb for faster downloads to viewer screens.

This just simply means that grahics posters have to use a graphics program to resize their photos and reduce the file size. "save for web" is a classic option that is useful on those graphic programs.

I must add that this is an etiquette adopted by other forums not Ausmini but it does sem appropriate here as well.

Which kind of brings me back to my original question. Is it possible to create a thumbnail with the forums' IMG tags? The answer is yes...

I've played around with some code and come up with this :

[ url=http://blah.com/large_img.jpg][ Img]http://blah.com/thumbnail.jpg[/Img][/url]

Just remove the spaces from after the [ characters and ensure it's all on one line. The thumbnail image can be say 200pixels wide the post loads extremely quickly as an 200px wide jpg will be all of 10-20Kb.

I personally prefer a 600 wide photo to a thumbnail. When I click on an imageshack thumbnail I always get pop-ups. (other sites do it as well) So now I will not click on any of them.

I don't get popups with Firefox. It just crashes firefox instead.
So I don't click the damn thumbnails.

Thumbnails annoy me, because they're always too small, and if you want to see the detail in forty different pictures in each thread you have to individually click every single one of them.

Let's face it, this is 2010, not 1997. Everyone has broadband these days, and the majority of us are happy to wait the extra ten seconds for a thread to load up so we can see the pictures fine the first time.

Stick with 640x480 I reckon.

sorry guys. Will downsample images before posting next time. And I browse on 3g often too.
I do like larger images sometimes if I want to see how someone has done something, or a particular detail. zoom right in.

I love the big pictures!

One window, reads like a golden book and is big enough to see whats going on!
