I was hoping some one would beat me to this for a change :)

If you already have orange peel, then yes, sanding it all out is the only way to get rid of it.

.

If you would like to prevent getting it as bad in the future, spray the paint on wetter. Move the gun so that it is only juuuuuuuuust fast enough not to get runs in the paint. This will mean that it cures much flatter... I would also suggest flow coating it to get it flatter and glossier still.

Your flow coat is mixed as 5% colour, 5% clear, 20% retarder thinner and 70% acrylic thinner.

Apply it as described above (just fast enough not to run) and leave it to cure.

The idea of the flow coat is that it takes longer to dry so it has more time to self level AND it is glossier to start with.

It is ideal to use retarder thinner in the flow coat,, but if you don't want to, then just replace it with normal acrylic thinner.

All good? :)

wo wo wo wo budy, don't go sand crazy on me :)

You only need to sand it till the orange peel is no longer visable... thats all, you don't need to take the paint right off!!!

Ok, this will save you some time. Read carefully

With 1200 grit paper and water, sand the orange peely paint till the peel is no longer visible...

Then buff the paint till a shine appears..

**IF** you sand thru the paint trying to remove the orange peel then sand the whole flare with 600 grit so that you can repaint it..

Does that make more sense that time? :)

alright i'll see how the 1200 goes,. BUT

i'm slightly more inclined to go a bit further ... 600...

rather go back bit more than do it twice... want her cruising tomorrow night.

.....without flares it's definaely a no go ..... even with em i get hassled bout tyre clearance.

Good luck, show us some photos when your done :)

nup, no different.

Just remember to spray it on so that it is almost slow enough to run. If its out of a spray can, then they usually use higher opacity paints with are thinner and run easier... so be carefull :)

Oh, and err, you obviously won't be able to flow coat it if you don't have a compressor and gun

Maybe too late now . . . but it pays to use a plastic primer or adhesion promoter on the top of the plastic flare. For a small job you can get a rattle can (is a colourless clear sort of stuff).

If you are stuck using a rattle can for the colour, drop it upright in the sink with some warm water for 10 minutes and it thins the paint and will give less orange peel effect.

still working on the flares.. but howz this a little off topic..

been doing heapa work on the old girl so left my toolbox in the boot last night (live in a unit so there's "apparantly secure" underground parking)

well woke up this morning with a few tools missing .. hammer wire cutters etc etc. (unlocked boot) thought thats weird why not flog the whole box

found them later scattered at the end of the car park .. used to steal someones dirt bike... pretty sure it was a wr450.

sketchy . . .
