I have a 1976 leyland mini that I believe to be an SS but want to make sure. It's got the badges, painted rocker cover, the special seats, cassette radio, leather covered steering wheel, the lightweight wheels, flares and side decals. My old man bought it off an old bloke who lives not far away about 10 years ago.

The VIN is 022D2S1MO9-21***

body number reads 022D2S3M09/22***

So yours is.............022D2S1MO9-21***

:?

Hmmmmm, sorry mate.... not looking good

EDIT:--> Farqhed,,,, jeez I love your user name :),,,, there is another member here named 1976miniss (not sure about what is in capitals and what is not)... she also has a genuine SS..

If you edit the title of your thread to mention something about "SS", she won't be able to help herself :lol: she might be willing to share her body number too, just incase :wink:

Thanks for the idea about changing the thread name. I also copied you and stared out the last 3 numbers. Can you edit your post and star them out... I hope you dont need them to tell if it's a SS...What do you mean by it's not looking good?

No not at all (see, numbers deleted :) )

You don't need the last 3 numbers. The last 5 numbers are not really relevant. I only left the first 2 so that you could get an Idea of the prefix to work out if it was even within 500 of mine.

I'm no expert at de-coding body numbers, but the first 9 relate to what model it is and when it was built

My first 9 read 022D2S3M09

Yours reads 022D2S1MO9

Now one of the body number buffs on here like Morris1100, GT mowog, or watto will be able to confirm or deny this,, but I think that "2S1" means base model, and "2S3" means "Mini SS"... Like I said I don't know for sure.... but if I am wrong, I garantee that within the next 12 hours someone will correct me :lol:

Farqhed, does yours stil have the complience plate?

If it does, on there it actually say "Mini SS", if it is an SS. Its one of few special run models that actually had what it was literally writen on the plate.

Otherwise, first thing tomorrow I will check my other clubman which is also a 76 model (but it started life as a base model) and I'll tell you what the body number is for a standard clubby.

It appears to be a base model Mini, emission controls and a 998 engine. If it were an SS, it would have been stamped as an SS on the compliance plate. Sorry no SS or even S.

It has S on the compliance plates. Is it possible to get a pic of an SS plate?... If it's a fake SS it must have been made a bloody long time ago... :(

EDIT: Here is a pic of mine. Image[/img]

022D2S1MO9-21***

022 = Leyland Mini S (021 = Leyland Mini)
D = Compliance code = not important! Something to do with ADRs.
2S = 2 door saloon
1 = trim level 1 = base model S
M = 4 speed floor change manual gearbox)
09 = 998cc

21*** = car number.

The Leyland Mini S and SS and LS all had the 022 code at the front.
Not all Mini S have Mini S stamped on the compliance plate.
The Mini S was avalable in two trim levels 1 and 2.
The Mini SS was trim level 3.
The Mini LS was trim level 4.

Is it true that some of these cars were made in NZ?
