It's important to check alignment of the 2 marks and sprocket centres with a straightedge, BEFORE putting it on the motor. I have pulled quite a few motors down where it was 1 tooth out.
1 tooth = 18° at crank... it's a lot!

so the motors ran at 1 tooth out ? must have been low on power, do you reckon they would run OKish both one tooth advanced AND one tooth retarded or one way only

I reckon I'd bin those gears and get a new set... the cam gear looks like it's past it's used by date.

I recently pulled down the 998 stroker that was in the wife's `pretend S' when bought, and found it was retarded by1 tooth. But it ran fine, we took it to Canberra and back twice, no power problems.
It's now been freshened up, and is in Baxter 850's van.

Just picked up on this topic as I'm about to fit a new duplex chain and gears to my newly re-bored 998.
So, apart from lining up the dots, what do I need to do to make sure the cam is timed accurately? (It's the stock A+ cam).

Hahaha
I mean a 998 (99H late Clubby motor) that had a 1098 crank & pistons put in it when rebuilt (by Mini Kingdom) years ago. Yeah it's effectively a 1098 now, but wasn't always.
