Who here can tell an engine apart by looking at a pic? Can anyone tell me what sort of engine is in this '77 clubby? It's obviously not it's original 998. We were told it was a 1275 out of a Morris 1100S.

Agreed.

What is the engine number? It should start with 12Y/Ta/H or 12YD/Ta/H

Its definately a 1275 - you can tell by the gap between the rocker cover and the thermostat housing. But..... it has the extra head bolts that a stock 1100s engine doesnt have/. What is the engine number prefix - its stamped just above the alternator o that ledge. Use a wire brish or sandpaper to see it more clearly.

BTW does the car have disk brakes ??

It's an 1100S block not a Cooper S, you can see where the rear welch plug housing has pushed the solenoid bracket out. Like mine... :P

The bloke said it had a 12g940 head on it. In that pic it doesn't have and air cleaner on, just a plastic bag... Now has a ramflo though.

Has anyone heard of a "3/4 race cam"? As we were about to drive off the bloke said "It's got a 3/4 race cam from years ago. Probably nothing special compared to nowadays".

Yes - years ago thats the way laypeople described cams. Half race, three quarter race and full race.

Nothing has changed greatly except that we use different terms depending onwho makes the cams.

At the end of the day its still the numbers that count - was then and still is today.

In broad terms - I guess you could say that a thrree quarter race cam would be classed asa good sports cam - probably equivalent to what was used in the police pursuit coopers.

However - cam design is one area that has really advanced from the old days. Graham Russell has said publicly that its cam design that has made big horse power minis possible

It is not unusual to see 1100s blocks with the extra stud holes, done a few myself.
Mick, are you saying that my wagott 40/80 cam is a bit outdated?

3/4 race cam usually means you only get through 3/4 of the race, then your engine explodes. :D
