Does anyone tune their cars with a wideband sensor or gauge?
Im thinking of buying something like this

Im looking to set the carb up with a bit more than by ear, as i would prefer to tune it myself and not go by ear.
What else do people use?
Im running a single carb and will be turboing it in the future so itll get a workout.

Keith Carver mentioned those in the last issue of Mini Magazine and said they were superb for tuning the carb but he did mention that the latest ones had copped some flak on the internet forums. Perhaps do a search on theminiforum.co.uk or minifinity.co.uk to find out more.

It would be very difficult to get any meaningful data from a gauge like that.

I take that when you say a single carb, you mean an SU?

This device uses a wideband sensor, but it records the info as well as deisplaying it, However, you need so much more data than just A/F Ratio. One thing you won't be able to do on the road is determine your dissy advance curve.

Yes it is a hs2 atm, but i have a hif44 to fit when i get a manifold for it.

Im also planning on running megajolt. so will be able to modify the advance by modifying the map.

I was hoping to change the mixture and the advance until the air fuel ratio was on the money, then leave it at that.

I use a Techedge 2J1 controller with a Bosch 7200 sensor mounted in the exhaust near where the gearshift comes through the floor.

I've found it quite handy, it has quite good logging software with it. I've also got a GM map sensor installed (so I have an idea of load) and log this with the air fuel ratio and rpm. It's interesting some of the crazy air fuel ratios you can see, yet the engine seems to sound/run ok

While it's not as good as a dyno with a good operator, I've managed to use it to sort out a couple of minis now, with ok results.

I have a mate with the Innovate Motorsports WBO sensor (not in a Mini) and I can certainly recommend it. Have saved our buts a few times from leaning out during tuning.

For those who are into microcontrollers etc, the Innovate LC-1 controller has a linear 0-5V output so you can datalog or use an input into other gear.

I also blame my Dad for me being 6' 1" - not really the optimum height for driving a Mini.

I have the Innovate LM1 wideband 02 sensor kit that i place in tail pipe for tuning, this way once the car is setup i can take it out and also tune other cars when need be too.

its the earlier version to the one on their website now.

I find it fantastic, you just got to lear where each needle pint is to then polish the needle for fine tuning

I purchased the Innovate LM1 wideband 02 sensor kit with a meter that you can use to record the data and down load it.

I should have purchased the 52mm gauge as I don't use the rest.

Move it from car to car, take the car for a run, change the needle and try again.

Saves using the dyno to get the mixture spot on.

A good investment if you are going to change carbies, turbos, etc or want to check different cars.

The LM-1 (now is superseded by LM-2) is on special at the moment from Titan Motorsport. US$279 I think.
They work well, I've gone for a drive with GR's one a couple of times.

Probably all you need just to check A/F ratio.
