I've just bought myself a new genuine SU fuel pump to replace the facet pump currently on the GT and am looking for tips to install. Is it just a simple, fit the bracket and pump, connect the wiring and hoses and that's it? Sounds too simple to me.

It's the dual polarity type and has two "vents" fitted. The instructions suggest that "the vents should be piped to a region of dry air e.g. car interior or luggage compartment". Is this necessary?

Any help appreciated.

Yep, it is as easy as that.

The pump should be fitted with the outlet uppermost, so be prepared to loosen the two screws on the top of the pump to rotate the outlet barb to the direction which best suits the outlet fuel pipe. Don't forget to retighten however...

Make sure to keep the hose as far away as possible from the exhaust however, nothing good can come from having it nearby, or swinging low in the breeze.

The pump works by flexing a rubber diaphram and has one way valves on the inlet and outlets. On one side of the diaphram is the fuel and the other side is atmosphere. Also on the atmosphere side is the 'armature' of the pump that moves the diaphram back and forth. The atmosphere side can be vented straight to atmosphere but by venting to the car interior the theory is that is should be cleaner and drier thatn the outside. This was a factory modification that I suspect came about from the works rally cars doing creek crossings etc.

The pump should last a little longer if vented to the car interior, but it's not 100% necessary.
