I want to replace the camshaft on my 998 mini together with new followers and whatever else I need to give it a bit more power. Do I need to remove the motor or can I do it with the motor still in the car.

Geoff :?

It can be done with the motor in the car, but you need to modify the passenger-side inner guard to get the camshaft out through it. Take the motor out of the car, it'll take muuuuch less time ;)

thanks simon the reason I didn`t really want to take the motor out was that the car had engine work done on it before I bought it and I didn`t want to have to take the motor out again just to change the camshaft but if I have to I will

It`s only a slight "twist" of a couple of the gills

Or just cut 1 grille bar at bottom, bend it up, put back down when finished and tack weld it.
Quicker than taking the whole lot out, IMO.
Pity we can't do 1275s (non-S) this way.

IMO the only benefit to taking it out is you can then time the cam in properly using a degree wheel, with it on the floor.

Jethro remember if your taking a cam out the cam followers & rods have to come out first other wise they will fall into the abis. If you have tappet covers its not to bad but if you don't its going to be real tricky and you will need to us rare earth magnets to hold them while you change the cam over

It's a 998 Jim, so no problem...

so gafmo / drmini in aust, are you saying that because its a 998 I won`t have a problem with the followers falling into the motor.

No, it just means the engine has tappet chest covers so you can get the lifters out without needing to hold them in place with strooong magnets.

On a non-S 1275 (A+, Morris 1100S motor) the rear of the engine where the pushrods go is solid, so you can't get at the lifters. On yours, you can just remove the chest covers with the cam still in place and there they are ;)

I still reckon I'd prefer to do this job out of the car myself, much easier access to everything and it's easier to time the cam in with a protractor ;)

well,,, just cause i`ve done it ,,, -->even if it is a "non-S" 1275 engine , you can still do it with the engine left in the car,--> "IF" you tilt the car up completely on it`s side

:-)

the only hassle is "IF" the spider comes with the cam, but half way out it falls out of the cam,,, if it stays on the oil pump , you`re away :-)

But before you pull the cam, you have to turn the cam at least one full rev (at least) to push all the lifters up so the cam doesn`t catch them as you pull it out

just thought i`d enlighten all the un-initiated,,, which i`m actually pretty sure that would be most of you when it comes to removing a cam from a 1275 non-S engine , in the car :-) (only guessing that there wouldn`t be many people who mhave actually done this)

sorry for the thread hi-jack, but it sort of pertains to the tangental subject arisen from the original subject, sort of :-)

I've done it, but rather than going to the hassle of tilting the car, I just used rare earth magnets down the push rod holes to hold the followers up - but we should be putting in new (or re-faced) followers with that cam anyway  . But IMO, pull the motor out, overall, the job should take about the same time time and at least with it out, you can see everywhere you need to and it is easier to time the cam in. And there is ALWAYs those other jobs that need doing with the engine is out...........
