I'm by no means an expert in this field but would some kind of open weave foam (ie the type that doesn't hold water) do the job as you describe?

I pulled my carpets and underlay out and revealled an amount of rust that was hidden. When I finally get all the glue off the floor and firewall from my underlay and carpets I wont be sticking anything with glue back on. That way I can lift it out if the water happens to get in again (yes, I will be putting all new rubbers in) and conceals the metal while it rusts away of the years as has happened already. I was thinking of using some velcro strips to hold the new carpet and underlay in but still allow it to be removeable. Not sure if my theory will work yet. When I go to the trouble of removing all the rust I definitely dont want any coming back.

I was given a Rover Mini sound deadening pad from a mate's half-cut. It goes from up behind the heater all the way to the front seat cross-member.

It's stored away for future use in my Traveller. You may be able to get one from Mini Imports or Steve from the former Brickworx if he has any left.

Cheers,

I'm with you Flute, i couldn't imagine that there would be too many mini's around these days that didn't leak water from somewhere that didn't end up down on the floor. I just fitted new underlay to my mini right through from firewall to under the back seat for $40 . I like the idea that if i do get water in mine i can remove it and dry it out , ( and my car has all good seals and rubbers in it but it still manages to get water in it ).
Colin.

[quote=NG]go uptp bunnings.

buy **** FLASHTAC*** GET A BIG ROLE, way cheaper then dynamat.

worked perfect. same as dynamat but lighter.

made my mini really low road noise.

Don't say that, i did and the dynamat purists get upset

I've used flashtac AND dynamat in 2 different minis. The products are the same except flashtac it 1/4 the price and easier to apply due to the roll size (i use the 100mm X 10m roll).

My van (soundoff car) has flashtac on the roof, firewall front floor and guards, it had 5mm rubber glued in the side panels so i left that there, it all works really well. From the outside the stereo doesn't sound loud, this means that noises can't get in either.

My Clubby sedan has dynamat throughout, firewall, floor, all guards, back seat panel, parcel shelf, roof and both door skins (inner + outer), i'd estimate about 60 - 70% of the interior panel area (more coverage than in the van) and it's still a bit loud, the real difference came when i put 3/4" felt type sound deadening across the firewall. Tap on any panel though and it doesn't ring, the doors go clunk, not CLANGGGGG

Thats my sound deadening adventure...

What about that thick black rubbery paint you can buy called sound proofing ( I think)? My dad painted it under the bonnet and plans to put it on the floorplan, underneath the new sound deadener and carpet, when it comes back from the panel beaters. Anyone use this stuff?

Actually I'd prefer to keep the car noisy.
Prefer to hear noises from the engine to keep track of any potential or upcoming problems. :D

i agree but i would like to keep my hearing for a few more years. i'm looking at limiting the noise coming through.

Tombo, PM sent with a few more questions for you

be careful when buying things because they are cheaper. they are cheaper for a reason. flashtac is an inferior product to dynamat and there are many threads on audio forums comparing different products. in particular on vertical surfaces (doors, firewalls etc) craptac is known to loose adhesion. if your doing a half asses job, by all means get the cheap stuff, but for $200 you can get a dynamat kit that will do the whole car with some left over (which i pretty cheap for a 15-20db reduction)
