yes -->sure,,, """ANY""" small clutch shudder issue is """accentuated""" by poor-split-broken oil-impregnated engine mounts,,, that`s quite well known & it doesnt` matter what type of car we`r talking about in that regard... However that minor & spridget type eng Mt design is pretty poor & not well suited to transverse engine & is one of the reasons why the smarter owners of those morris 1100 & 1300 type cars got a-hold of that drivers side engine steady bar package (i think they initially came from the automatics to help stop the jolt when going into gear) but definately became "The thing to fit" (back in the day)

a big fat heavy flywheel,,, Just like the SA 1100 engines,,, & the Morris 1100 & 1100-S (4-door) etc have,,, fitted to a 1415cc stroker (all fairly stock elsewhere throughout the build "package"),,, you seriously can leave the thing in top gear & drive every-where on light throttle ... they`re like an automatic,,, & cost nothing to run & are extreamly easy & smooth & Very torquey to drive,,, they`re definately not a snappy cranky road/race car,

100hp (at the wheels) is a snappy, cranky, "Race" mini,,, not a nice smooth cruising road mini... definately won`t like a heavy flywheel fitted

again,,, this is where & "WHY" i suggested to NG (Nick) earlier that i use a bigger capacity engine with less "cammy-ness" , & it was only then that the rest of said engine "package" became a "light/heavy" flywheel issue,,, but it was all born from me describing the engine "package" that the flywheel issue came about... i was only trying to get across that wasn`t suited to civilised road use

Hey,,, after all this goes away,,, & everyone moves onto the next can of worms thread that Nick starts,,, :-) i`d like you all to know that i do actually like light-weight flywheels, i`ve been making them & selling them since i was 16 years old... & yes there`s allways one fitted into my own minis

RACE cars use extreamly high revs,,, """THEY""" want to have extream accelleration,,, "THEY" don`t like big fat heavy flywheels,,, "THEY" are "RACE" engines,,, Not "ROAD" engines.

& No ---> i`m not trying to tell everyone to go out & purposly fit big fat heavy flywheels to their road minis,,, that`s NOT what i`m saying at all

but a pottery wheel is hard to stop turning hey?

a dinner plate isn`t

a bigger flywheel "Holds" more enegry

& 100Hp mini is a cranky thing to drive

thems just simple facts of physics

BMC allegedly came up with this overweight flywheel in Morris 1100S to cure shudder during takeoff.

A heavy flywheel won't help if they had clutch sudder. Why didn't they (BMC) fix the root of the problem instead of trying to mask it with a heavier flywheel....(maybe because they were fixated with remote shift gearboxes  )

Yea, I thought that's what you meant Matt.
You may want to re-phrase your earlier post and replace torque with 'Momentum' or 'inertia' or something.

Syd

It's stored energy, just the same as a battery :!:

A heavy flywheel can give the impression of torque where it does not exist, however once the stored energy has been disapated, the true torque of the engine becomes more apparent.

Matt, (I think you are trying to say)

Heavy Flywheel = less responsive engine
Light Flywheel = more responsive engine.

I like lightened flywheels in big bore engines - road or track - but definitely no, they are not for everyone. They do need a bit of a different driving style and inevitably you need to row the gears more.
