well i have pulled it all apart today and have found that it look like the spring is way off, i know it does not move much but it is a fair bit off being flat,
kev where do i need the spacers for? i have three straps and when bolted up the straps are not flat either, i wmight just drop it off at GR's in the morn and let him do it all for me cause my lathe is too small and will not hold the flywheel and my drill press is onlt a toy too.
will see how i go.
You only need spacers if the flywheel has been lightened by turning. Usually 0.200" comes off so 3 spacers about that thick are put under the straps.
If flywheel is stock or lightened by milling, not needed. maybe add a washer if you need to.
Straps must be parallel to flywheel when all assembled, and the spring FLAT.I don't use a press- I just add/remove packing until I can see spring is flat, then allow for it in machining. Handy we have 3 lathes at work..
Mine is spot on now. It was out by .035" (thickness of 1 strap) so I machined that amount off the 3 posts on the backplate.
Kev, just looked at a friends flywheel and straps without the spring/diaphragm thingy attached.....two straps had a slight bow (up about a mil) in them....one near straight.....and there was about a 1/10 inch to come off the posts for the straps to sit flat (or 1/10 washers under the bolts to make the straps parallel....(parrallel, but about 1/10 above the face of the flywheel).
Centralising the whole thing is within about 60 thou
The question is....do the straps have to be flat to prevent clutch slip?? as the symptoms here are clutch shudder...
