I will be building up a fast reliable 1275 road engine in the near future and was wandering which engine is the best option.

I dont know much about the A plus engines , what are there differences from the A series. Good points, bad points i would like to hear them all.

I may also use an A plus gearbox, are they any better, stronger?

All constructive replies appreciated

Thanks

I am not sure about the differences in quality, I fitted an 1275 A+ to mine which came with a HIF44 carby and electronic dissy. I only did the head, valves and seats etc and new gaskets. And I have been very happy with it. It has never missed a beat, even driving through the recent floods here in Perth. Mine also came with the Verto clutch which needed a new bracket made up for the slave cylinder.

The car had a tired morris 1100 motor in previously and to be honest I never had a problem with that either and I drove that for over a year at about 80 k's a day. I think the key is to get the best of whatever you decide and maintain it regularly. Parts availabilty may be a deciding factor though.

Just my experiences sorry I couldn't give you more real info.

Not much difference really. Speaking of blocks:
1275A+ series-
Bad points:
Castings are porous near the bores, so most were factory sleeved.
Water jacket cores are misaligned with bores.
Not many about in Oz, apart from late Mokes and Rovers.
Good points:
A bit lighter
A bit stronger (in places)
A+ cranks are stronger (supposedly) than the big journal A series.
Heads flow better stock but don't mod as well as an A series due to port size/shape.

1275 A series-
Good points:
Thicker castings around the bores, they bore big better.
Still plenty about (non-S)
Bad points:
There's a hole above the centre main bearing on thick flange blocks, but the jury is out on whether it matters. many of em are racing, no prob.
Early S blocks had a weak casting around the centre main bearing.
12G1505 big journal cranks tend to crack.

At the end of the day though all the whirly bits are interchangeable, for a high performance road motor it don't matter a rat's, IMO.
I'm running a Morris 1300 auto block with Cooper S crank and rods in it.

For a high performance motor, the standard A+ verto clutch/flywheel is too heavy.
You could change it to a normal "pre-Verto" clutch, but it would be easier to start with an A IMHO.
