I had a main bearing failure (no loss of oil pressure!) which left a lot of white metal swarf in the sump... but it didn't look like that...

Re-assuring I hope! :)

Well I took the car for a drive last night and everything seems perfectly normal, no excessive noises or whining so I guess it's just fingers crossed at the moment. :?

That might not end well...
Chunks of aluminium don't just fall off the inside of the case, and if they were to do so would have done it at any time in the previous 40 years.

If you lift the motor out as soon as you can, you might find you have prevented any further damage to the engine. if you leave it, the wearing parts will overcome the engine's filteration system as well as ruining the gearbox.
