Driving home from work tonight my clubby broke

It started with a noise a bit like a stray spark, but only under load, this quickly turned to a loud ticking coupled with rough running and a lack of power.
Only noisy under load.
So i pulled over and had a closer listen, when i rev it stationary it makes a sharp pop/tick kind of noise through the carby. To me this is suggesting an intake valve problem but i have never seen one burn, only exhausts up till now.
I'm going to do some testing tomorrow and find out what it is.

Fingers crossed it might be as simple as a riding tappet.

Intake valves don't burn, but they can stick in the guides.
If it's spitting out the carby rhythmically, I'd pull the head off.

Tests showed a blown gasket between 1 - 2.

Time to get rid of the bolts and fit some new studs....

I have no secrets, it is one of those aluminium colored ones. I'm not a big fan of them so i'm putting a monotorque, never had an issue with them

But there could be an issue with the old re-re-re-used bolts, i've never been too sure about the torque required for them either due to the coarse thread.

Those old head bolts are bad news, they are all brittle now. They snap off at top of block.
Get thee some proper studs and nuts..

Yesterday got a new stud, nut and washer set. Opened it up today and found this. Now this is the gasket that blew to coolant November last year and 90% re-sealed itself, got my moneys worth

1-2 clearly blown through, 3-4 only had the fire ring, no fibre material, 2 and 3 both leaking through to coolant, and underneath 1 and 4 leaking through to coolant too  Some sort of record for me..
