I guess I could google it, but if I could get an understanding on what happens when a Mini engine gets balanced it would be great.
Is the crank balanced with the rods, pistons, rings and all. Does the flywheel and harmonic balancer come in to play during the process?
Does using 998 pistons with an 850 crank dramatically change the balance?
Usual method:
1. dynamically balance crank.
2. add flywheel to it, balance that.
3. Add backplate, balance that.
4. add diaphragm, balance that.
5. Balance rods end to end using scales.
As for the harmonic balancer, some say balance it, some say don't bother. MED ones are fine as they come, GR told me.
Using heavier or lighter pistons affects the `balance factor' but not the balance as such. But do weigh `em, and make them all the same.
[edit] re the rods- check for straightness, 1/2 the ones I've checked have some bend in em.
