Hi everyone,
in the process of an engine build and have been reading detailed information with regards to the current camshaft fitted to this engine.
the engine is a 1216cc (1100 with hillman imp pistons) with flat top pistons and with the 12G295 head it should have around 10:1 compression (i will calculate exactly when i get the head). i will be using the standard A+ rockers and a 1.5" SU to start with, upgrading to a larger carb/manifold setup within 6-12 months.
the head has large valves with unleaded seats but is not ported.
the current camshaft is a 731 grind of which i have been reading all about in both david vizards books, and on the internet.
the feedback i am getting is that this cam is quite old and i dont feel this will take advantage of the engine build i am putting together.
my question is for everyone, which cam would you suggest?
the car is a daily driver but doesnt do a massive amount of stop start so a lumpy idle is fine as long as it is driveable from 1500rpmish.
i have had quite a few cars in the past with lumpy cams, and i dont mind them as long as they are not to crazy.
i dont plan on reving the engine higher than 6500rpm as the bottom end is not super strong and it wont be raced.
i was thinking the 266 or 276 megadyne cam. maybe a 286 if that wasnt to undriveable for the road.
i would like some feedback with regards to who has what cams and what they are like in traffic and general driveability etc etc.
i dont want to spend big money, knowing that the bigger the cam, the more other parts around it require upgrading, followers, pushrods etc. i didnt really want to go crazy with it, just take advantage of what i have while keeping costs and driveability realistic.
i have come to the conclusion this cam is not really suited to this engine and while i have it in a build i might as well spend the money and get a better camshaft.
cheers
jason
