What is it with sellers of cars?!

You contact them to ask about their car, you try to ask a few questions about the vehicle, you ask if there is any movement in the price and they get all shitty on you and become obstructive/unhelpful?!

Mate...I'm spending the money, I'm going to ask questions to make sure it's as advertised or not a lemon. And, I'll see if I can get it cheaper than advertised. What's wrong with that? Sorry, should I just roll over while you give me one

Now I ask four direct questions: 1. Bodywork, 2. Mechanicals, 3. History and 4. Price. If I sense any difficulty I just say - see yah. I like my money in the bank - your car can rust away for all I care...

Give me strength.

Wait till you tell em you want to organise an independant inspection, they usually go right off tap for some strange reason

Coz I reckon most of them are crooks...

Heard a horrible story at the weekend about a chap who had owned a concours Cooper S for many many years (or so he thought) only for somebody one day to point out there was something strange about his shell...fake!

Gutted him...

We had a bloke come into work who purchased a newish corolla that didnt seem right and upon further teardown it was found to be missing the front bar reinforcment, (totally not there) the drivers side airbag was a rag stuffed into a deployed caseing, seat belt pretensioners were just bent up from the down position aswell as the rails being 7mm out of alignment, but the seller seemed quite honest to the poor bloke

Did I not tell the story earlier of when I bought a BMW motorcycle from a vicar! A bloody vicar for gawds sake...can't trust anybody...

Most of the surviving ex-works rally cars have been re-shelled. Some of them were re-shelled a few times while they were still works cars.
So the chances of getting a shell that Paddy or Rauno or Timo actually sat in are very remote indeed.

Its not to difficult, either steal the cars or kidnap any of the drivers.

When selling a car you are at the mercy of the buyer however that does not give the buyer the right to insult the seller, as some rude people have done to me in the past.
The vehicle that is presented for sale, is what it is, and it is common courtesy (if it's not to your liking) to say "thank you for your time" and walk away.
It is very important to ask prying questions before inspection whether price is one is debatable, as you run the risk of upsetting the seller of what could be the best bargin you may ever come across.

Personally I don't bother talking price untill I'm happy with the product as the initial asking price got me interested in the first place.

Once you have assessed the condition and asking price, well I say game on . As a buyer you can be as cheeky as all get out .

This is how i approach it be it right or wrong.

Remember you will catch more fly's with honey than with vinegar .

Yeah i had to ring a seller from Ebay tonight re a car for sale on behalf of another family member. Seems the number he listed has a restriction on Incoming calls. Bit Dodgy i reckon.

Not necessarily, he may have just been calling from work.

My pet hate is people putting "No Private Numbers" on adverts. My employers block my work number. My home number is silent and also blocked after we had some trouble with an ex-friend a few years ago. So my only option is to use my mobile all the time. Technically a tiny bit naughty as it's a work mobile.

If the price is vaguely in the ballpark I'll take a look before trying to reduce the price.

To balance it - I have been very jaded by people ringing up about a car that I have advertised for sale. The phone rings at 5.30 am in the morning of the advert and the very first question is "whats your lowest price" ????????

At least inspect the car, ask the right questions and be half serious about buying it before haggling on price.

Yes, I hate that too. If you are silly enough to give them a figure, they come around, pick on something small and immediately want to knock another 10% off.

I especially hate the knobs on eBay that ask for a "best price". I always say the same thing - you want it, you bid. My best price is the start or reserve, whichever is greater. Simple.
