hey guys,
off this weekend to find a satisfactory air compressor but need to know what the minimum specs required are for an air compressor to be used for spray painting...ie minimum L/min, constant pressure, ect....I'm using a star s770 to paint with. Also would like to know where i can purchase an inline water trap

I readily say that I am not painter, however for spraying with a HP gun, usually the absolute minimum CFM you would want would be 12 CFM, but I would recoomed one much bigger as inevitably you'll want to do more with it once you have it and some tools will need more than this, so keep that in mind. Also putting a longer hose on reduces the effective CFM your getting at the gun, so don't be tempted to use too long a hose.

If you ever want to get a sand blasting cabinet, you'll need a big compressor (about 24 CFM+).

When looking be sure that the figures quaoted are 'free flowing CFM'.

You should be able to pick up water and oil traps from where you get your compressor.

Some places to try that have a bit of a range and reasonable prices;-

https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/ and

http://www.gasweld.com.au/ and

http://www.sydneytools.com.au/

Sometimes you can get 'package' deals.

Well GT i shall spill the beans, but only to you (& everyone else who reads this  )

from the sydneytools.com.au site(GT recommendation!), bought the Chicago belt drive 100L,3hp,15cfm, 302L per min, for $600 plus only $20 postage, also got a regulator, hose, oil....

I've been looking around for a while & reckon this is the most affordable/best kits as others with the same stats are more expensive & usually only direct drives.(when they break they're stuffed)

Plan on buying a few things from the local hardware store...that are usually only interested in football apparel for most of the time

Top buy.
I've got a 13cfm with a 75 litre tank. Does little bits for me, including individual panels at home but cant run air drills, die grinders, air grinders, and assorted other bits. The cfm is ok, but the size of the tank is a little small.
Good for me, and if I were patient it would spray a whole car, but I leave that for the work compressor.
It actually works really good with rattle guns and pneumatic pop rivet guns (including 1/4 inch monobolt guns.).

I have a 2hp 17 cfm with a 50ltr receiver (from gasweld)

I have a good gravity feed gun and I reakon I use about 50% of its potential.

15 cfm will be heaps

Thanks for sharing. Let us know what the delivery & service etc is like. I've had a reasonable run with these guys. Let us know how the compressor goes too.....

......then once we know that it's OK, we'll borrow it

Yeah, those direct drive things are thrashing machines. I don't bother even looking at them but would they have a direct drive in this size?

Problem is you quickly hit the 10A/15A break point if you want a bigger compressor.

My shed is only 10A :(

It doesn't matter how much you have it's never enough. I have 125A per phase / 3 Phase and at times that hasn't been enough......
