Holden EH?!

Ah, yes, another Holden that led the world in innovation, design and price - oh, hang on, no it didn't.

The most influential cars of the past 6 decades - and they include The Great Wall. Well, that remains to be seen. I have not had a good look at one, but saw one at Knoxfield shopping centre the other day and it is seriously Fugly. I wonder if there is anything in that car that is truly innovative, or is the influence to simply be price, as suggested by Davis? I guess if we all worked for a bowl of rice, and lived under the "guidance" and "freedom" of an oppressive communist government, then we could all afford to be building such cars.

My thoughts precisely. Too bad the EH's "Innovation" did not extend to disc brakes instead of the boot polish tin lid front drums.

As for the Wall, what is he thinking? If he was thinking cheap cars for the masses, the Trabant would have been more deserving!

That's controversial to be sure, but he does make sense. I doubt there will 1/2 the numbers of cars made outside China in 20 years as there are now, which sadly means we may have to live with the styling. I never knew they were so cheap, although I've also seen much uglier cars. They'll encounter the same resistance as Jap cars did in the seventies, then soon enough they'll be unremarkable much as Hyundais are now (assuming there's any petrol to buy in 20 years...)

I doubt whether China will be in one piece in 20 years time, given the massive changes occuring there, the political situation, human rights issues etc. Economic progress has its limitations, look at Japan who's economy has plateaued and now moribund.

And, the WW2 jeep is missing from the list. As the founder of all modern light 4WD's and SUV's, I would rate it as far more influencial than most on the list.

It might be scraping to be in the 60 years as mentioned in the artical (same as the VW beetle) , but on the same not the Suzuki LJ20 (2 cyl 2 stroke) and LJ50 (3 cyl 2 stroke) 4WD's should be in there as they really pioneered the way for the small off roader for the masses , prior to that it was WW2 surplus jeeps or imported Jeeps which were bigger and more expensive .

I dont claim to know everything, but I disagree China will plateau in 2 decades. Remember Japan underwent its industrialisation program from the 1860s. It only 'plateaued' in the 1990s. And this was largely due to the industrialisation of China anyway.

Fair enough viewpoint. But i have this feeling something's gonna give when you consider the industrial espionage China is engaging in, the deliberate low valuation of its currency which I think the Yanks will start to get a bit p!ssed off about very soon!

Maybe. Hard to tell. Yank investment in this country is huge (just like Australia and most other countries). Easier to take punitive action against a country when you have something to gain (ie. Iran, N Korea). Will be harder with China. Probably lots of sabre rattling and temp cutting of diplomatic ties. Nothing much else. Money talks for some - but not Mini owners. We are above that all!
