Hi Guys,

just wondering if anyone has had any experience with a 1330cc mini engine? Are they reliable? They are obviously not stock right? I am thinking a 1275 bored to 1330. I have looked on youtube and have seen a few people with the 1330 project. Can anyone recommend this? Can it be a reliable daily driver? Any faults?

Reason i am asking is cause i am considering buying one and i not sure why it isnt common.

Reliable? Yes, as much as a standard 1275 except that you know it has been rebuilt at least once whereas a an original 1275 would be getting a bit long in the tooth.

Only reason they are not common is that most are now out to bigger sizes e.g. 1380cc
Also most "1275" engines have usually been overbored but are just referred to as 1275 for convenience.

Any other tips regarding this engine would be greatly appreciated. I have a budget of around 3k including rebuild and installation of the engine on my 1969 mini k.

1330 is a very common size. It is just as reliable as any other motor.

Some people have an impression that the bigger the motor, the less reliable it becomes, but this just isn't true. A well built 988, 1098, 1275, 1310 or 1330 etc are all going to be reliable. The trouble is, the bigger the motor, the harder people push them, and the harder they are pushed, the more likely they are to break. Further more, people bore these motors out, and change things like cams, but then don't set them up properly, with the correct dizzy advance, timing, jets and needles.


My 1330 is great, very reliable.

Are you buying the motor? How much is it?

What work does it need?

allow $1800 for parts on any rebuild of a motor.

Do you have a gearbox to suit? Does it need a rebuild? Allow $500+ for parts for a gearbox.

Are you doing the work yourself?

i am buying the motor for around 2k. He says its been rebuilt 9000Ks ago but i called him and he said its being sitting for around 2 years. So i want to get the rebuild done because i cannot be certain. The gearbox that comes with it is also rebuilt as he says.

I spoke to a person by the name of John.

John says he can pull apart the motor for around $150 and check to see what needs replacing. He said he will only replace things if the gaskets have been incorrectly put in or are damaged. Otherwise it should be ok. He was very clear and understandable over the phone. Seems like an ok guy to deal with.

I only have a budget of around 3k all up which might be stretching it considering you have given me those figures. I may have to wait another month or so to save to 4k.

What is included in that $1800 price tag for the rebuild?

I have a complete rebuilt 1275 motor basically ready to put in, bit over 3k and it could be yours.

john at mini king is very good (one of the best), he will help out the best he can...

i dont think $2000 is a very fair price as it's been sitting for two years, think of it this way..
being a buyer you should be thinking of how much it's worth, but also how much you have to spend on it..

i have seen alot of 1275 engines on ebay and other sites for much less than 2k,

take this for example

I think if I was to buy this motor for 2k, I would be fitting it and seeing how it goes before sending it for a strip and possible freshen up. I have a car that had not been started since 1995, it was turned over only. Other than maybe stem seals down the track, it runs great.

If you are going to freshen it up, then I would look around for one that needs a re-build and pay accordingly.

If I was to buy an engine for $50 I might just be tempted to put it in and see how it goes... But if you're paying $2k for it another few hundred to make sure it is all sweet and should (hopefully) be trouble free is worth it I reckon.

If it is only a few hundred to do it, I agree. But he has already a verbal quote of $150 to pull apart and inspect. Add in gaskets, labour and other consumables and this will be $500 in no time. I reckon run it and if it is no good the put the $500 straight into a rebuild.

well there is no reserve, id say youd probably be able to get it for $1200, just through the auction

But being a 1275, which are a little harder to come by, I'd spend the extra $500 and have something sweet rather than something that might explode and be out all those $$$.

I'm not saying you're wrong and I most certainly am not having a go this is just what I would do... I build my own engines which makes it a little cheaper but I'd still be pulling it down. If everything's sweet then you're really only out a few gaskets, if it's not you've fixed it before it becomes an issue.

Bit different if the engine's not been sitting around for ages and/or you can 'try before you buy'.
