Of course they can, but everyone with a fuel injected car will be screwed because aliens use EMP bombs. Detonated at high altitude the massive electromagnetic pulse will destroy all electronics in the area. This will have blown the arse out of all the engine management computers for a 2000km radius. I will drive past in my Moke while everyone stands on the side of the road with the bonnet of their modern car up, scratching their head.
