Are all starter motors the same, for example is a cooper one different to a 998 one?

They are generally the same through the 60's although later models in the 70's changed the method the brushes contacted the rotor resulting in greater surface area and slightly better performance and brush wear (J? K models?). The front bush also changed later on. I think it acts as a bit of a thrust washer to stop wear caused by the axial brushes in the later units which push the rotor forward through the case.

I bench test them before fitting. I clamp the starter in the vice and hook a battery to it to see if it spins and then I lever a length of wood against the pinion to see if it works under load.

All the same, have to belt em all with a hammer occasionaly

They are all inter-changable except for the pre-engauged (which are late Rover) ones.

You could (*cough cough*) fit a geMini starter. They are made in da land of da rising sun, but work well in the dark too.
Also, they don't shed Lucas pinion teeth if your roadbound race motor needs 20° static advance... (I have a fair collection of 8T starter pinions now).

Does the Gemini starter fit in a cooper S with the oil cooler ?

I got a perfect 30 year old stock starter motor off Poeee last year and after a clean up and a set of brushes put it in. It looked like the starter had been from a wrecked car with 1/2 a dozen k's. All clean and newly brushed for fun, it turns over a stock S engine like a sewing machine going flat out. Its a real delight cold or hot. They're more than ample if there's nothing crazy like super high compression engines or anything like that.

I seem to recall it does not.
I had one in a clubbie with an oil cooler mounted on the "shelf" but they are higher than a roundie

The solenoid that sticks out is the problem here. They will fit an S if you move the cooler towards the radiator. OK for a racer...

As for what Mick said re a Lucas, yes they are fine if in new condition. The UK remanufactured one in my 1360 (10.6:1 C/R) spins like a top, (as long as I leave the ign kill switch off until it's up to speed, then flick it on). Otherwise... I'll have MORE Lucas busted pinions.

What about the Bosch Planetary Geared one that I Make? They start any size mini engine no matter what compression ratio it has with great ease and they also fit with the oil cooler in front. They are also Lighter than the Lucas one. And the most important thing is that parts for them are available from any Auto electrical parts place. Have sold them to many Mini racers and they are more than happy with them. Something that I invented and modified when I raced Minis myself. What a great idea that was.

Also if you look really closely you can JUST see the sticker from the supplier. Says serviced by auto electrics or something,,, well thats our friend Tony at Jimbomba, makes these awesome starters,, its one of his, obviously from many many years ago...

That's not a Gemini, they are not Bosch, and their solenoid is in a different position.
