I wish the guys at British Leyland, as the Mini was consigned to 'ancient history' thanks to bigger, faster and more comfortable cars, could fast forward 30 years and see the enthusiasm of the wee car's fanbase.

Little would they know that what was literally rubbish then (they probably trashed the technical details for the Marina, the Allegro and so on at the same time) would be treated in a manner befitting the Turin Shroud.

They'd be flabbergasted :)

I agree

Anyone who knows me knows just how well I care for my Moke. I wash it at least annually, and never drive through mud more than three feet deep.

I am also very careful about maintenance, replacing motors whenever required.

I also use it sparingly - having never driven it further than Darwin.

And rust!? You haven't seen anything till you've seen my Moke. Actually, as there isn't any rust at all to see, even if you have seen my Moke you haven't seen anything

I guess, like anything, if you look after it, it will last. It's just amazing that mine is even still running, let alone rust-free.

Watto.

Ahhhh.......another true Moker - welcome to the club

Apart from motors I for one am also aware the same goes for rear sub-frames, but I also know that you like to go away to do these :!:

I object, your honour!

I have only ever changed two rear subframes - one when re-shelling the Moke in 1991.

Yeah, OK, the other one was in Bamaga at the top of Cape York in 1986, and we did them on two Mokes!!

The defence rests!

Watto.

I am the one who is compiling the traveller register. to date i have
2 in SA
7 in VIC
9 in NSW
1 in TAS

0 in QLD, NT,WA,ACT.

As far as i am aware i do not have this vehicle on it.

I have pictures of most of the cars on the register and details of colours, features etc. I would love more info on this vehicle myself for the register if it is a true Traveller.

Regards
Allan

Ah, good, we are back on topic.

I am as guilty as anyone of hijacking this thread, so good to see someone is still on the ball.

Looking at those figures is interesting.

Can you put me in touch with any of the owners in Vic for a feature in the next issue of TME? PM or email me if possible.

I am already aware of the one imported to Australia for evaluation by BMC in the 1960s, and am looking into the car that started off this whole thread.

Another one I came across back in 1998 at Minis By The Bay was a light green one that had apparently been imported by the British High Commission for one of the high-ranking officials' wives, and was originally painted white. The story I was told was that she didn't like the car being white and had it painted the light green.

Allan, if you, or anybody else, knows the whereabouts of this car, I would like to get in touch with the owner and see if the car is suitable for a feature in TME.

Again, PM or email me with any info, please.

Cheers,
Watto.

I will go through my stuff and see if I can find the magazine story from when Leyland was looking at building Wagons in the mid 70's.

I'm an owner of a Traveller in Vic (not pretty though), and so is 'Countryman' who owns one of the British High Commission cars

You know I've got a cosmetically-challenged one also. :)
