Gday all!

Ive been researching some general designs for a mini trailer to match my 74 Leyland.

The search function didnt turn up much here, so I just wanted to know what if anything other people have learnt and want to pass on before I get started. Have any people on ausmini done this before?

The idea is a "Pig trailer", single axle, with the front and rear of a Leyland. Just for light camping gear etc. Pretty much like like this one here. Ive searched on TransportSA and come up with PDF instructions on:

- National code of practice
- Brakes on small trailers
- Light Vehicle towing and trailer regulations
- Trailer lighting requirements.

Just gotta read them now...

Cheers, Ben.

You won't need brakes on a trailer with total weight under 750kg (a lot of mini carrying trailers don't even have brakes).

I'm building a mini trailer at the moment. For me the key factor id keeping it light. If it's under 200 or so kilos then the registration process is much simpler in that I can just use the same numberplate as on my car and thats about it.

:D

as i understand Victorian road regs if the trailer is the same size or smaller than the tow vehicle and less than 3 metres long no reg is needed .
so that means the 3 mini trailers that we have all carry the same plates as the cars :D :D

I think im going to sketch out some designs and go from there.

How are you doing yours? Straight cut at the doors, or are you going to join two ends or a front+end?

I like the hard tops, but dont know how difficult that might be? Could use the roof?

I'm doing a straight cut at the B pillars. I'm thinking I'll get a panel pressed with MINI on it of something (kind of like you see on ute trays) to add regidity and put something there, otherwise it's just a big flat piece of nothing.

At this stage I plan to use the roof for a lid but it won't be easy, the roof is narrower so will have to be widened.

This one was at the 2008 Mini Show in Melbourne (and also Mini50Show I think).
