Surely it sounds no worse than a collapsible steering column?

I have done it on my speedway Mini. I just tied the car up to my 4 wheel drive and pulled it up on it's side but that did not matter about putting a few dents or scratches on that. In your case it sounds like an engine out job and rebuild is coming !! You don't go to Rome without visiting the Vatican ! Good luck.

Ha Ha, love it. :D
Thank you gentlemen for all your advice, engine out it is then.
It will take about 4 to 6 weeks for the parts to come together.
Thanks for the offer of the hoist Scott, I'll take you up on that. Quicky's is a bit too big to bring over and I think Rodney would ask to use it soon anyway.
I have a brand new engine stand, but not a hoist.

Might be after your help mate, especially when it comes to fitting that alternator and reworking the throttle cable.

Bob, are you removing the MPI engine from your rover or something else?
If it's the rover you may find it easier to drop the subframe / engine package completely.

Yes, it's my MPi that's coming out.
Is it easier to drop the bugger then ?

Either way will work, depends on what you have access to and if you're just doing the cam or doing lots of other stuff in the enginecompartment too.

To take the engine out of the top you'll need to remove the inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, brake booster, wiring loom, radiator (yours is front mount to wouldn't want to damage it), expansion tank, and nearly everything else.

If you drop the subframe then the booster can stay in the car and only one brake union has to be undone to the front brakes. The radiator is mounted on the subframe and the exhaust won't need to come off. The inlet manifold will need to be removed from the engine (not completely), but the wiring and fuel lines could stay there too.

I put my 99 engine in from underneath because of the AC compressor, and the easier access to the bottom engine mounts.

I'm sure this'll be worked out in due time but you'll need the following when you do it:
New exhaust manifold gasket and new inlet / exhaust gasket for the head. Note injected cars used metal gaskets on these so you might have to order them from overseas if you can't find a local supplier. Get some new vacuum lines for the throttle body to ECU as well, the degrade over time and leak and the engine doesn't run well.

Thanks for that. I think I'll pull it out anyway.
As mowog said, can clean the block/bay and time it much easier.
Replacing manifolds and wiring and the rad's coming out for a backflush.
Might need some new vacuum lines, that's a good point. :)
When I did the brakes/suspension recently I fitted the flexible master cylinder hoses, so it will move out of the way. Should be able to leave the booster in place.
Fitting new fuel rail and will have to modify the throttle cable.
Done some homework on the gasket situ.
Where is a copper AF470 sold in Oz, any idea ?

Pretty sure Karcraft have them, they are the ones that i have been using you years with great success. From what I hear, stay away from the AF460 though. I would also suggest exersising caution if you are tempted to try the current range of BK450's.......
