When we had Barney with the twin HS4s and #6 needles, it had what felt like a lean spot just above idle. I was running 10W/40 motor oil in the dampers.
GR and I took it for a run up the road with his A/F meter, and found it was actually too RICH there, not lean. Just for fun we took the dampers right out, and the mixture cleared up. So I went home and tipped the oil out. Ran it dry like this for all summer and autumn, no probs.
I did subsequently put ATF in it during winter, as it was tending to be lean. Typical SU....

Hehe - a damperless SU works nice, doesn't it? ;) The only downer on my carb is that it doesn't like to start very well, when cold.

I forgot to put oil in this morning, doesn't drive nicely... I still have the AFR meter so I might see what it's like, but doesn't feel good

As above, I had comp. front bump stops on my car which helped minimise the geometry problems until I fitted adjustable arms. Horrible things, they were.. they were on there for years and didn't disintegrate, but they did increase the spring rate waaaay too much and caused the front end to be jittery.

Offload 'em ;)

We fitted a stronger spring to my carb when we removed the damper assembly. Though Des Hammill goes on about leaving the spring out in his 'SU performance manual', or fit a very soft spring... All I can say is that it works great and improved acceleration & throttle response a fair bit. And still get's me about 35-40MPG (imperial) :) (with a MG Metro-ish engine with stg1 kit).

Certainly a very interesting topic that can cause quite a lot of controversy (Hammill is the first I found to write on it)

Still struggling to fit the front guards onto my project. :?
The passenger side fits OK but the drivers side seems to be too long by about 10mm. :? :?
Looks like more measuring and checking to try and find where the discrepancy is. :(

Went for a run to the Road Warriors Cafe at Mount White on Sunday morning. It has re-opened and is bigger and better than before. There is also a small bike shop behind the cafe now.

On the way there I was having trouble with accelerating out of the corners - seemed like a dead spot in the twin HS2's that would clear when given more gas pedal. Not sure about the remedy - think it is running to rich in the colder weather so I wound up the jets by two flats. Not sure whether it is fixed yet or not. Maybe it is too lean?

Cheers

Finally got moulded carpet in and cut off excess and aligned holes for belts etc...

Question for anyone out there.. our 998 motor wont turn over, though we're getting spark!
We think we may have the wrong spark plug firing order, but cant find reference to correct it.
Does anyone have photos from the dizzy cap to the spark plugs that we could use for reference?

Cheers

Firing order is 1-3-4-2
#1 being the plug on the radiator end of the engine & about 2 o'clock on the distributor.
The others follow in ANTICLOCKWISE order.

Firing order is 1-3-4-2. So is the motor cranking or not cranking? Probably best to start an entirely new thread for this fault so you get more help from everyone.
