That's lots cheaper than even getting a spray seal done. Who is the supplier and do they have agents in Queensland? :)

Sorry I,m getting my maths upside-down and back to front , 250 x 100 metres - 25,000 square metres - approx $30,000 plus site preparation for the full-depth Hot Mix Asphalt - room for competitor assembly as well
.

Good luck with it. I just wish you were up in Queensland

Better check the communication with the supplier. 2 coat costs about $6.00 per sq.m in good quantities. 25mm AC can be $25.00 per sq.m. At 25,000m2 you will get a good rate but not $1.20. He may be thinking the quantity is 2,500m2 but if that were the case, $12.00/m2 is pretty cheap and 2,500m2 is not a quantity buy.

I agree with 1018cc - an AC supplier like that would be nice here in Queensland but there isn't one like that in the country. I'm a civil engineer by the way..

You will need some soaked CBR tests for the soil and a soil classification if you think you can use the existing soil as a pavement material to save money. The CBR's will give someone information to design the pavement. 100mm is probably too thin..

Cheers.

OK , I,m now getting some numbers back , I am looking at using Foam-Mix , an aerated recycled asphalt made by cold/hot fusion , it can be made and stored on site and then when ready mixed with water and hot bitumen this creates steam which aerates the mix while its being laid/ rolled , its made by RoadStone Recycling in Laverton , we would make a test site of 60m x 50m 3000 SM ( 15cm depth ) at $80 a ton it would be approx $86,000 , the final figure would depend on the Geotech survey, soaked CBR test etc

To answer a few questions

Location ? This depends on site price, Council zoning and regulations, proximity to good arterial roads, it will more likely be 1 1/2 hours to the West / North West of Melbourne

Reason ? Why not build a quality Tarmac venue for CAMS / AASA Motorkhana Events if you have the opportunity/ finance

.

i can ask my boss about this tomorrow, we do bridges & roads as well. From memory i think a CBR (Californian Bearing Ratio) of 15 is usually required for a road base...but don't quote me. CBR tests are pretty easy(when the ground isn't rock) ,a dynamic cone penetrometer measures how many hits it takes to beat a steel rod into the ground in 90mm(?) increments, from this we use a table & figure out how many hits to a cbr level eg 7 hits is something about a 4.5CBR rating. Just some "fun facts" for people interested

I love it when people talk engineering :P

Soaked CBRs are to determine how the subgrade will perform when wet because this is when roads fail (poor soil gets wet with innapropriate pavement or subgrade drainage etc = failed pavement).

A DCP or Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (the thing you drive into the ground by dropping a weight on it) has its uses but in this case is not what is needed.

In short 74 Snail needs some professional advice. I'd suggest that this forum is useful for general layout size and comments about locality but everyone should leave the rest to whoever Snail choses to get local professional advice from. This is important as the advice he seeks can be relied upon for design and there is a comeback for him if something fails and he is in the mood to litigate. If he does something based on advice received here and it fails, it is money down the drain.
